True. has negative value to Toronto if he doesn't retire most likely would be 7th d-man for most of the year. Gio would probably give it another year if he was back in Calgary and can be 6th 7th D-man here to replace some of the LD strength Flames are giving up in that trade

If you bothered to read you would see it says Nylander extended and were trading down 12 spots

I read that, how is he supposed to sign before July 1st? It is impossible to trade for him as anything more than a rental before July 1st

teams can give permission to players to speak to other teams to determine what the cost of the extension would be. a deal in principle can be in place to facilitate the trade and then get signed on July 1st.

No that's illegal, players cannot do any negotiations at all regarding a new deal until the final year of their contract has started.

And even it it was, why would Calgary pay extra for a player they are signing to an extension

if you honestly think that Toronto has no idea what Nylander wants on an extension right now Then switch the 1sts to 2024 and do the deal after the deadline. I don't know why you are arguing semantics

I do think Toronto doesn't know yet because they are literally not allowed to talk about extensions at all. Just like how Calgary has very little idea on what Lindholm wants.

The point though is that Calgary would have even less of an idea since they can't even go off internal rumors.

I would much rather move the 2024 1st, thats not even up for debate. 16th OA is guaranteed to be a pretty good pick.

Toronto giving up Nylander for 12 spots in the draft, an okay defencemen, and a third string goalie. Absolutely not lmao. This is a team that scored 2 goals a game in the second round, trading away our second best winger for that makes no sense on Toronto’s end

In Conroys first ever interview as GM of the Calgary Flames he said this
“He’s going to be one of the first calls,” Conroy said. “When we talk about this, all those seven unrestricted free agents, we’re going to be in contact with. I do know where Elias was thinking prior, and now I want to see where he’s at, I want to see where his mindset is at right now.”

If you think GMs are not talking to Players and Agents and figuring out extension details and dollar signs even if they aren't allowed to officially begin contract negotiations then I don't know what to tell you.

GM's are allowed to learn the mindsets of players, get to know them, ask about what they are planning to do, etc. They are not allowed to discuss numbers or term, or anything else that could officially be part of a contract. It's really no different on how Calgary was confident Markstrom would be willing to sign with the Flames before he hit free agency because he's close friends with Lindholm and Lindholm worked as kind of a middle man, unofficially.

You can probably get away with some stuff with players on your own team but it would raise some massive red flags if another team was given permission to talk to a player prior to them being allowed to discuss extensions

this is exactly what im talking about. even if TO cant give permission to Calgary to talk to Nylander dont you think that if this trade were actually being discussed then Torontos GM would share with Calgarys GM what Nylander was thinking or that Nylanders agent would go to Nylander and say hey William would you be willing to entertain signing in Calgary where you were born and where they have a ton of other Swedish players that you are probably pretty familiar with if so maybe you should reach out to Backlund or Lindholm and let them know you would be willing to sign an extension at x cost.

Even if they weren't able to do the above then you agree to a deal in principle with Toronto and then just wait for July 1st and discuss the final details of the trade before the draft. could even be a sign and trade like what Tkachuk did with Calgary last year

You absolutely can talk to your own player about how much money they might want on their next deal. Other teams cant talk to your players without permission but you can most definitely talk to your own players. Just can't actually sign the deal until July 1st of the year their contract is set to expire.

It absolutely would not be a sign and trade. Florida did that to get Tkachuk signed for 8 years and at a lower AAV then he would have got on a 7 year deal. there is nothing preventing Nylander from signing an 8 year deal after a trade.

The rest is purely you speculating on how teams can work around the rules

it is speculation but you are delusional if you think teams have no idea what their future UFA players are thinking on term and money going into the draft simply because they cant put official pen to paper until July 1.

Delusional? Did Treliving know what Johnny or Matthew were thinking going into the draft last year? IIRC he said on the floor that he was fully confident he could get both players signed. And those are players he was already allowed to negotiate with. Reality is none of us know until a deal is actually made, GM included. Last time Nylander went until contract negotiations it lasted until the 11th hour before it was too late to sign for that season, I would be shocked if it wasn't similar this time around
