The logic in the deal is that if Markstrom continues to be awful, his contract is untradeable, whereas a lot of GMs can write off one bad season and give him two more. The Flames get out of a potentially crippling contract making room for Dustin Wolf to come in and tear it up with Vladar, and Murray can spend half the year on IR like he always does.
If the Flames could get like a 3rd round pick, bonus. But no salary retention on Murray: he's only got one year left at that contract and the Flames can absorb it as Conroy takes a year to get a feel for the job. If Markstrom turns out to be good, good for Toronto. But if he turns out to be good for Calgary, then you still have a three goaltender situation with Wolf pretty ready to make the jump to NHL backup.
