I'm not so sure the Sharks hang up on the call. Liljegren and Timmins both fit an organizational need. Timmins has a recent injury history, but Liljegren is promising and could excel with more playing time.

We also trade Karlsson without retaining. If Murray can return to some kind of form he'll be excellent trade bait with half salary retained next year. Lots of players have an uptick in contract years. Either way the Murray and Brodie contracts are gone after one season. Major cap headache gone.

Not saying its perfect, but if someone were to want EK65 without retention and two promising young RD prospects are part of the trade then I think that's pretty interesting.

Not sure what your thought process is on the Dallas trade. Matthews barely out produced Benn this year. Matthews is 2.1 million more against the cap. Yes he’s younger but is also unsigned after next year. Dallas also already has Hintz. Paying two first line centers isn’t realistic with a salary cap. Keeping Wyatt and Stank on cost controlled contracts makes way more sense

Ok these are fair points. Liljegren is certainly the most interesting piece here and he does fit a need. Timmins could be moved or just dumped to the Cuda. I won’t lie that Murray is indeed intriguing but his injury history is dubious at best, regardless, Murray, Brodie and Timmons have only one year so the risk is light. Might be that Grier wants a prospect or pick thrown in considering the monster year that Karlsson just put together but your points are valid.

Well the trade would only happen with an extension lined up. Marner could also fit the bill but figured Mathews and Hintz at Centre would be better than Hintz and Seguin which is what would happen if Marner took one of the RW spots. Regarding their production, Benn overachieved and Mathews underachieved this year. Everyone knows what Mathews (or Marner) is capable of. The leafs might have to give more to get this return, but it’s not so far off I don’t believe.

It still doesn’t make sense for Dallas long term. They’ll need Benn’s money coming off and guys like Wyatt and Stank around on cheaper deals. Adding Matthews doesn’t make sense as we have Hintz. Adding Marner doesn’t make sense as we have Robertson. I’m no turning up my nose at either guy, it just doesn’t make sense to add another big contract up top. Hintz and Matthews would be amazing but would also cost way too much. Especially with Segs still around. There’s much better fits for both guys. Benn didn’t overachieve he’s just finally out from under a defense first coach

Marner is a RW playmaker though. And Robertson is a LW goal scorer. Imagine them on the same line with Hintz. What it would do is provide more points per dollar. Though you’re likely right in saying the lower dollar contracts would do the same thing. It’s also too bad Faksa’s contract is as much as if is, as I really like his game, but not for that cap hit.

Marner would be amazing with JRob and Hintz. But you’d have to thin out the rest of your lineup to make that happen. You’d have to worry about offer sheets on your RFAs. Etc. Faksa is over paid but I don’t dislike him in the lineup. Faksa, Glendening, Hakanpaa… our bigger defense first guys really got exposed against Seattle. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t useful against more grindy/physical teams. It’s easy to overreact to playoff hockey. I’m glad we’ve kept Nill as GM as I do think he learns from his mistakes. I’m curious to see what he does this offseason. I don’t think it will be anything big. I don’t have a clue what Toronto should to lol. I looooooove Marner. I don’t think he’s the guy you move. That Tavares contract is ugly. I’m kinda glad we missed out on him and Karlsson (even tho he had an amazing year). I don’t like the idea of giving away substantial futures to move cap, but if you could talk him into waiving I think moving that contract is the way to go. Doubt that’s realistic in the real world tho. Nice to have a healthy conversation with a Toronto fan. I hope they can get it together for the few fans like you. Cheers

Yeah I’m open to whatever. I just want to see them succeed. Maybe a change in management and coach would help. They should have made these changes after their loss to Montreal though. Now they’ve wasted two more years and still have nothing to show for it.
The Karlsson trade one just one I thought of when I still had cap space after the Mathews trade. I do agree with you that the Tavares contract is the one that should be moved, but Mathews & Marner both have no trade protection before July 1st and would therefore be easier to trade, and you’d also get a bigger return for them. I would have loved to have seen Mathew Tkchuck on the leafs. A couple years ago there were rumblings about a Nylander-Tkchuck trade but tkchuck is obviously the better player now. Only time will will if the leafs make the right moves.
