Given Bouchard's emergence, I don't know if the Oilers would still be interested in Karlsson. I also believe they'd want Broberg in return. I do like the ambition though, would be a massive move!

What Edmonton needs is better 5v5 scoring. Karlsson both adds and facilitates that.

Broberg is a non-starter and I realize that none of these guys are Steven Lorenz or Eetu Makiniemi, but they will have to do in a pinch..

Regarding retention, why did they retain on Burns? The same concept is at play here.

Regarding prospects, one is a low-scoring 4th rounder, the other is an under-sized 7th rounder. Each are currently more suspect than prospect and every single player coming to SJ in this transaction are at least 3rd rounders or lower. Worries about a 4th and 7th round long-shots becoming good NHL players are bad for business in this league.

This is a very generous deal for the Sharks, for reference see the Brent Burns trade.

No interest from the Flyers

There’s literally negative interest in this trade from a Flyers standpoint

Brent burns wasn’t a 100 point scorer and he wanted out if San Jose. Not the same thing at all. Almost $20 mil in retention isn’t very realistic
