Necessary Shake Up

Description
The (new?) Leafs GM makes some spectacular moves, trading red hot Nylander to NYR, where his father had his best seasons, for Lafreniere. The Leafs take a bet on the kid, discounting the slow progress. The Rangers wanted to shake up their kid line, so they jump on the occasion to get a high end talent.

The GM also manages to trade Rielly to the Kings, who have long waited for a dominant #1 LHD. The return is another youth, Vilardi.

With these two trades, finding a new home for the two players with the longest history on the team, the GM wants to mark the end of an era.

Meanwhile, the new GM continues the good ole tradition of convincing ageing players born in the GTA to put their skates on for the team, on the cheap. O'Reilly, Toews (he's still alive, and rejuvenated at the idea) and Schenn head over, at a home discount. Domi joins the party, for one year.

Finally, the new GM trades for Karlsson. Robertson and a 1st is the price to pay.

Woll is the starter.

  1. Lafrenière, Alexis [Droits de RFA]
  2. Lindgren, Ryan
Détails additionnels:
Like a famous sports journalist from New York said, it may be time to shake up the kid line, and move one of them, taking the bet that Lafreniere won't live up to expectations. Lindgren is insurance for the Leafs, and to balance cap.
NYR
  1. Holmberg, Pontus [Droits de RFA]
  2. Nylander, William
Détails additionnels:
Nylander is attracted by the spotlight and the prestige of NYC, like his father before, and signs there at 5@8.5M. Holmberg is NHL ready and can slot in a backup role.

TOR
  1. Kaliyev, Arthur
  2. Vilardi, Gabriel [Droits de RFA]
Détails additionnels:
LA has been looking for a big LHD. Rielly is a legit top pairing guy that transforms the Kings into a top contender immediately. Meanwhile, LA has an overabundance of forwards, and Rielly has a hefty price.

Toews isn't a GTA born and raised kid.

There is this thing called the salary cap, which limits how much a team can spend on players and the Rangers are up against it, so Nylander is a non starter. Plus, Lindy is not being traded and Laffy probably isn't either. No thanks.

Laf struggled in the playoffs and he won't see the top 6 as long as you have Panarin and Kreider in front of him. I wouldn't be surprised if he was traded this summer for a RW tbh, especially if Tarasenko and Kane walk.

Tarasenko is definitely signing elsewhere since he wants to test the UFA market and Kane isn't worth a bag of pennies. The entire Ranger team, except for Shesterkin, had a bad playoffs, so it's not on just the young kids. Panarin scored as many goals as Laffy, which was 0. We shall see what Drury does but my guess it's not trading young kids for older, high priced vets. If he does trade for a high priced vet, he will move one out at the same time.

Well that is the thing about Nylander. He isn't really a vet, he is still in his prime and is both a great passer and has a nice goal scoring touch. Effort is an issue at times, and he is obviously not the best defensively, but that could definitely change with guys like Trouba and Krieder riding his ass. The leafs don't really have that player who is not afraid to call players out for their effort. He will still be just under 7 million next year as well, so that gives the Rangers an extra year to sort out potential cap issues. The Rangers have just under 12 million in cap space this upcoming offseason. Acquiring Nylander and re-signing Miller should quite easily fit under that window with enough room left over to fill up the rest of the roster.

One of the Rangers biggest issues is guys not giving 100% and not being willing to do the dirty work in the corners, along the boards, in front of the net and backcheck effectively, so that is the LAST type of forward or player they need. It's just another Panarin with less points. Laffy, Kakko and Chytil all had bad playoffs, but it wasn't because they didn't work their asses off or play hard. The kids are not the main problem with the Rangers IMO, so no reason to trade any of them, especially considering they are cheap compared to some of the lazy vets. Don't see Drury wanting Nylander. However, if a Panarin for Nylander deal could be worked out, and balanced out with picks, then maybe.

Leafs would probably have to give up a lot in that trade due to Nylander being on the last year of his deal, which I wouldn't be keen on. Another 11 million dollar cap hit would also screw the Leafs. Perhaps if it was Marner for Panarin it would be more likely. But again, Panarin has a full NMC and I doubt he would waive.

Reilly is a horrible trade option for LA. He’ll be 30 on an 8 year deal. Horrible.

Definitely not getting those young guys for him.
