Is Backlund a fit

Description
I haven’t really looked at value and comps yet, but he might be a guy we could be interested in for 3C. The AAV is a little high, but as you can see below, it appears to fit.

I don't hate the idea, but I think you have to let Severson walk and keep Haula as the 4C. Otherwise, you're paying a lot more for Backlund just to make a horizontal move at 3C.

You’d need to add McLeod, Boqvist or Bahl and we’d likely retain something on Backlund in return BUT THAT’S IF he truly wants to move on from CGY, which is just Rumors and Complete Speculation at this point

I bet Bratt gets close to 8 x $8,250,000 and Meier gets 8 x $9,000,000.

Severson will get more on the open market.

Not at all. Cap hit is huge for a 3C and one year isn't worth what it would cost to beat other teams' offers.

There's also no reason to sign Severson to that hideous deal when we have Nemec and Walsh. I love Sevo but he's just not worth it. Give half of that money to Tatar and half to make sure Meier and Bratt stick around.

Didn’t he request a trade last summer?

McLeod and Boqvist are probably a lot more expendable than Bahl. But perhaps there is a bigger move with Backlund and Hannifin (if they are moving on from both) that could include Bahl (and other pieces).

I view Backlund as a considerable step up from Haula, especially defensively. And could be much better compliment to our other centers.

It would be nice, in theory, if we could deploy a full shut-down 3rd line that would free up Hischier’s line for more offensive situations.

If we did this, we likely trade one of Severson or Marino in summer 2024.

And if we could get some Backlund retention and/or a bigger jump in cap ceiling….maybe we could squeeze Tatar in.

7.875 million was Fiala’s AAV. But better yet, $7.875 x 8 = 63 million. Bratt wears #63.

(It’s an unserious approach, but a fun one).

Yeah we Wings fans were doing the exact same thing with Larkin. 8.875 x 8 =71 million Larkin wears #71 we thought it was pretty cool as well.

I'd rather let Nemec and Walsh get a shot. We already have to deal with a RHD logjam when Casey signs, no need to make it worse.

I was told that Backlund would never be traded because he bought a house in Calgary. #youknowhoyouare

Yeah I just recently heard that. I know Backlund’s frustrated, but how serious the Rumors that he wanted or wants out of CGY is still all speculation AFAIC

Hanifin sounded more willing to commit but if we can’t come to terms on either, I’m sure we could put something together. NJD has lots of great pieces and I could easily see Hanifin wanting to play long-term in Jersey and on the East Coast closer to his native Boston

There is a certain poster who knows the housing situation and relationship status of every player.

Then there are some folks who said Backlund would never waive because he built a house, as if thats a thing. Stuff like this comes up all the time on here

That Funny 😆

Yeah, I don’t think buying a house means much or guarantees anything at the end of the day

Nemec gotta wait until 2024-25. Getting one developmental year in NHL now is not worth sacrificing one prime year on ELC later.

I'm here for Backlund if that's the cost. Like, VERY here for it. Just letting Sevo walk. I know you want the extra ELC year but Sevo on 5+ is not the optimal way to handle that. I'd just let Nemec run wild. He's ready imo

I’d like the idea of signing Sevo and then trading him or Marino in summer 2024. Under $6m would be home team discount…he is probably getting a lot more on open market.

Fitz clearly disagrees seeing as he signed Luke now

To me that just seems a lot easier said than done. I doubt Severson is signing without trade protections.
