I like it for both teams to be honest. If Cat won't resign, may as well free up cap space, get futures. This way they can upgrade their goaltending and bottom 6.

I don't know that New Jersey has the cap space to sign Cat on top of Meier and Bratt both needing new deals.

Ignoring the fact that the devils could end up trading their 2024 first to san jose if they make it to the ECF so the first would be a 2025 1st this is an easy yes for the devils
