Offseason Oil Change

Créé par: Miguelicious
Équipe: 2023-24 Oilers d'Edmonton
Date de création initiale: 6 avr. 2023
Publié: 6 avr. 2023
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Not a huge huge change, STL seems to be trending towards a re-build.
Oilers always linked to local product, could be a good partner for Nurse to help solidify that first pair.

Trading away Kulak frees up a slot for Broberg full time.
Yamo, although a popular teammate, isn't what we're looking for if we want to play a skilled AND bruising game from game 1 to game 83+

Sprinkle in some B-prospects/picks as needed to facilitate trades

Blues aren't retaining on Parayko, And that's a pretty pathetic offer for a top pairing RD.

Just because he slots into the top pair doesnt necessarily mean he is top pair material. Case in point: Cody Ceci.

Ceci is by no means a top pairing guy. He's playing there because:
A. Bouchard is better served playing with Ekholm
B. Ceci provides 'Decent' minutes compared to the alternative (rookie Desharnais).
C. A better fit defensively than the recently-departed Barrie

Parayko, while being undoubtedly better than Ceci, has struggled as of late and is viewed more as a Top 4 guy, than a bonafide Top Pairing guy. He would play on the Oilers top pair though, for the same reasons above.

He also has a bad back and a long contract - you sure you want to go down that road? Back issues don't just go away.

I agree. Bjugstad would fetch more on the open market. He has, though, made interesting comments regarding his time in Edmonton. I think the combination of being tolerant to our weather AND the prospect of playing for a contending team AND having a clearly defined role AND knowing he's a fit for sure could knock his price down. He's easily a 2.5-3M guy as a UFA (summer overpay included). I wonder if 1.5M gets it done with the above caveats.

As for Parayko, what's the overall feeling about him in your fanbase? I hear everything from "oh my god cap-dump, to the above 'first pairing RD' guy". It's tough for me to gauge his value since I don't see him lots. I think he's solidly a top 4 dman though. I just saw he's from here and the biggest hurdle (weather) wouldn't be as big an issue compared to other players.

I forgot about the back issues! He's missed significant time dating back 4 years, but the last two (incl this season) kind of is a better sign?

Durability aside, am I out to lunch with the valuation?

He’s undoubtedly a good top 4 Dman but he’s not a top pair guy. On the oilers yea but statistically over all no chance. 2 years ago his WAR was 50% while playing 2nd pair minutes. He’s currently on pace for his 2nd worse season. He’s never broken 35 points. He’s good at hitting and blocking shots but top but barely top 50 and 30 for defenders in either category. Now with lingering back issues as a concern I feel as though the trade proposal above is probably an overpay.

He hasn't missed many games but his play has deteriorated. He's likely still better than Ceci but I don't think he's $3M + Yamamoto + 1st better than Ceci.

Guys, he has missed like 1-2 games the last two full seasons. One injury does not always a chronic "issue" make. Even with that one admittedly whack injury he's still smong the most durable D-men int he league. This will be the sixth time in eight seasons he's played at least 79 games, and one of those when he didn't was the COVID-shortened season.

To answer your second question, YES. The Blues are not interested in trading Parayko, despite what the hockey rags say. Then, they are not retaining for eight years. Then, they're not interested at all in Yama or in Ceci, and they sure as hell are not adding cap to trade Parayko for a bunch of nickels and dimes. Kemp is okay, but nothing to pay huge for. Of course, a 1st in nice, but you guys will win this Cup so it will be the last one in the round - again, not very exciting. The fact that you also asked for a pick back is hilaaaarious. So no, this offer doesn't even get you to the table.
