You have no cap space for a full roster here, primarily due to the retention on Tyler Myers, who is unlikely to be wanted by any real contender. However, any non-contender with plenty of cap room, such as Anaheim, Arizona or Chicago, would probably be happy to take Myers off Vancouver's hands without retention once his bonus is paid on July 1, when the remainder of his compensation is only $1 million in salary. The Canucks would probably have to give up one of their 2024 fourths to do so, but that would be infinitely preferable to holding on to him, even for only one season, given the drain on their cap situation his contract inflicts.

Your value is a little off in the pick swap with Minnesota, but more to the point, the Wild are a legitimate contender now and for the next couple of seasons at the least, so they are the team that will be wanting quality over quantity (i.e., fewer but higher picks), whereas as a rebuilding team, the Canucks are the team who would prefer to have as many picks as possible. (That's why it's the rebuilding teams who most often trade roster players for draft picks.)

I'd rather they but out OEL then pay this much in retention. And I'd rather they keep him than buy him out.

$3MM x 1 is less than what it would cost to retain Mayfield as the RD3?

I agree with most of what you say,but you are reading the Canucks wrong. The GM has stated publicly several times,we are NOT rebuilding we are retooling. We are looking for players that can play now or next yr or the following year.He said were looking for players 26 and under to help the team sooner rather than later. We have a good core here we dont need a rebuild.IMHO.

For years 3 and 4 you’d have 1.1M less dead cap if you retain 50% instead of buyout and then you’d have four more years of 2.15M dead cap. Retention is the way to go.

Pick values pretty close. They’d only move down maybe 12 spots and then add a fourth. I figured it makes sense cause they would still have their own second and they’re missing their third and fourth so it’s a win.

Also a lot of teams only roster 22 guys for a chunk of the season to accrue cap space. If they could make all these trades work they’d gladly run 22 all season lol

Yet Mayfield is significantly better than Myers

Why? Bc you decided Lou should want him or do you have an actual reason

I agree, he’s much better. Keep in mind as you seemingly decide to paint me a villain here I’m not a Vancouver fan lol I can see Mayfield getting more then 3M on the open market and Lou having to pivot. There’s more options to move him I just see NYI as a possibility because of this. Just playing around man chill out lol

True, but they can't afford Mayfield anymore after this season, and Myers is better than any of their in-house RD3 options like Hutton, LaDue, or Wilde (lol). Myers (even at 50% retained) is certainly not the ideal choice, but they could probably do a lot worse.

The floor on Mayfield's next contract should be the Josh Manson contract ($4.5MM x 4). Even if for some reason he takes a discount to stay with the Isles he's getting $4MM. And good for him; he's been underpaid for a while now and deserves a payday.

I’m just saying it doesn’t make sense for NYI. And if we were willing to spend 3m for the RHD (which I think Lou might) it would be to retain Mayfield. The thing Lou has been awesome at here in NY has been keeping guys on Long Island

Doubt it he’s probably looking at something similar to Gudbranson (4 years 16 million) and Lou could probably work out 5 years 15 million which is the same 3 million Myers would get. The one thing Lou has done better than any GM is keep the guys he wants to keep. He also has a history with NYI of spreading out cap hits for a little more term and getting guys to take a little discount

He’s going into his age 31 season and someone is going to give him stupid money. I’d rather let him walk than tie up that cap hit through his age 34 or 35 season.

Lou is gonna keep him though. Also I’d rather have a still cheaper Mayfield who becomes overpaid during the contract than a very ineffective Tyler Myers
