Retension for 3 years making Murphy a 3.1 per year cap hit starts at a first and then probably requires something else. 3/4 year ufa d signings the last few years... Leddy 4 years at 4 per, Rutta 3 at 3.75, Gudbranson 4 at 4, Chiarot 4 at 4.75, Manson 4 at 4.5, Barrie 3 at 4.5, & McCabe 4 at 4 You are taking Murphy for 3@3.1 per over any of those deals. The Hawks have no reason to trade Murphy just for the sake of trading him.

So the Hawks should sell him for pennies on the dollar (which is what retaining 4.2 million to get a pick in the 40's would be)? There is zero doubt that the Hawks should be trying to move on from Murphy and they should be willing to retain to improve the return....but this proposed return is NOT the return they should be taking for him. Do you honestly think if the Hawks offered Murphy for the next 3 years @ 3.1 per year, that no team would offer a first? My guess is there would be multiple teams happy to do a first (plus something better than a pick in the 100's as the add). This is not Kane with a massive cap hit to navigate, where he is a pending UFA with a no movement clause and can demand only one team. We are also in a world where the cap is not going up much and why cap constricted teams will pay 2 first for a great contract like Hagel or even a first for McCabe (when you retain him to a net of 2 million per year in cap). Murphy retained gets a first, or you just let him play, be a mentor to the kids your bringing in, and otherwise wait till you get your asking price.
