Is retaining 1.5MM over 7 years worth going from a 2nd to a 1st? I think it's close.

Absolutely not. 7 years of retention is absolutely not worth going from a second to a first. Add 2 firsts to the deal if you want that

That's not a lot of retention to erase a significant mistake. If I am Vancouver I take it. By the time Vancouver gets back to contention status, 1.5 million won't matter.

That’s not even close to enough to get miller with no retention. Vancouver wants 2 1sts plus for miller straight up, add in the retention and you’re looking at 3 1sts or equal value

1.5 is significant for 7 years. That’s 7 years of one of our retention slots being used up. Whether you like it or not, Miller is a good player who is playing up to his contract. It won’t end well but no long term contracts do. This is bad

The way I see it, 1.5 million isn't a ton on a 90 million cap in 4 years. Yes, the retention slot loss sucks, but really not that hard to work with...I mean retention has so little value right now, see Bill Guerin's return. Vancouver isn't contending for at least 2-3 years, and by then, the cost to move Miller will have gone up.

I have no idea of the direction of the franchise, as trading Horvat then trading for Hronek is perplexing. I mean, they got rid of one of tbe best 2Cs in the league, only to add a great 2nd pairing D that won't help tank in tbe next couple years, and then Vancouver needs to pay Hronek a raise after next season. Super bizarre.

There is no cost to move Miller. He has a lot of value. The asking price is 2 first round pick equivalents. This won't cut it. The Canucks won't be retaining to move Miller. Trading a pending UFA Horvat that they can't sign and trading him for a top 6 winger in Beauvillier, a top 4 defenseman in Hronek, and a top prospect in Raty is pretty good for a retool.

That's fair. I wasn't sure since it was 7 years. I think another pick (a 2nd maybe?). I don't think a second 1st though...

I agree that this deal isn't enough for retention, but two 1sts for Miller and that contract is an absurd price.

If Miller had a lot of value, Rutherford wouldn't have called the Penguins about him. The asking price is 2 firsts, they won't get that.
I don't know if you guys are baseball fans but Miller is similar to Reynolds of the Pirates. A really good / borderline great player. Not a total difference maker but a strong part of the team. The difference is that Reynolds is on a cheap contract. Miller is not.

Paying 8MM for 30 - 33 years = good value.
Paying 8MM for 34 - 37 years = poor value

Sorry but Miller isn't worth what you think. Not with a salary cap.

What do you think would be a good price for Miller with Van retaining 1 - 2MM?

Rutherford didn't call the Penguins because A, he is not the GM, and B, we don't know who called who. Penguins were reportedly very interested in Miller and were offering multiple high picks which the Canucks didn't want. The Canucks don't even want to trade Miller. Canucks certainly won't be retaining for 7 years to trade him

Penguins can't afford that. They can't even afford Miller with no retention. That is why no deal was made

I believe they don't want to trade him but they have been linked to the Penguins for 1 major reason. The Penguins window is 0 - 3 years (0 because it might be closed), Vancouvers window is closed but will reopen in 2-4 years (depending on moves). Miller's contract lines up with the Pens but not Vancouvers.
Do you, as a Canucks fan, want Miller to count 8MM and be a 40 point player in the middle of your window (5 years from now)? I wouldn't think so.

They can if they move a defenseman. Van doesn't want Petterson or Petry and couldn't get a third team to jump in.

Pettersson would be fine. Petry would not. They couldn't get a third team to jump in at the deadline because it is hard to have so many moving pieces. It was likely always going to be an offseason trade anyway

I dont think Canucks will retain unless they have an absurd offer. 8 years to retain is too much. Without retention I think Miller maybe gets a 1st and B prospect? I mean good player but brutal contract is how I see it. Wouldn't think his value is super high, maybe less than I mentioned. I would think Canucks would want to get rid of that

I doubt our GM was going to trade for Miller, he's absolutely petrified of giving up 1st round picks. I dont doubt that he called to see to give our ownership the impression he was trying, but dont think he offered multiple high picks

I was thinking a 2nd and 3rd and B prospect.
So if you were the Canucks, would you trade up 32 spots in the draft (2nd to 1st round) for taking on 1.5MM in cap for 7 years? I might...

I just think Van should get out of that and the OEL contracts as soon as they can. Get value before those two fall off a cliff. Which will happen right around when Van starts to contend again.

Sure the last 2-3 years of the deal will probably be horrible but that’s the price you pay when extending good players. Miller is still a top line producer right now and would instantly make any team acquiring him much better right now. 8m is below market value for a top line basically point per game player that’s proven for a few seasons now he can be that guy.

Chychrun didn't even get two 1sts on a cost controlled contract with 2 years left. Meier, albeit a rental, didn't get that much. No way Miller would get two. That term of the contract brings the value down, not up. At most he'd get a 1st +

Arizona could have got 2 1sts for chychrun but they botched the situation like usual. Meier did return 2 1sts and more as an expiring contract. Like I said the last few years of millers deal won’t be great but he’s a good contract for the next 5 years and point per game players cost more than 8m plus with the cap rising it will look even better over time
