Description
Pens are cooked for this season, this is purely to try and land Meier for longer term.

The most recent reports on Meier's price tag were a first and basically two prospects. Devils were/are the lead team but SJ wants Dawson Mercer, a first and apparently Holtz or Bahl. However, devils refuse to make Mercer available and supposedly will back out if SJ doesn't budge.

To me that opens the door and puts pressure on the Sharks new and first time GM Grier to get a trade of some kind done to get value back knowing Meier would most likely go to FA if he finishes the year in SJ.

Could change the 2nd RD from 24 to 23 if needed.

I seriously doubt the sharks even consider that offer when NJ, Carolina, St Louis, Winnipeg and even Vegas have better packages they can offer that easily beat this. Unless that 1st ends up in the top 16 this deal is beat imo

Am I crazy or if the Pens somehow miraculously get Meier, why would they trade Zucker instead of going all in?

please read my description. A lot of GMs have started noting that the asking price for Meier is far too much, (NJ And Toronto as of recent) that's going to play against the Sharks and their GM is a first time GM, he'll get pressure to move Meier for pieces. It could still easily go to NJ but if he doesn't back down on his asking price NJ will walk away.

Hextall claims he doesn't want to give up a 1st in a trade, if zucker nets a 1st in return. Meier doesn't make the team this year better b/c the bottom 6 is awful, but it sets up for a better eyar next year.

Yes their asking price is high, so why would they go for the lowest offer (this one) instead of the next best? NJs 3rd or 4th best offer still easily beats this.

He is also an RFA with a QO that the Sharks can easily match. Grier has said, if they don't get an offer they really like, they're not going to just settle.

not saying they're scraps, other teams definitely have better prospects, but the possibility of a deal not getting done grows each day with GMs actively coming out and saying "Yeah they're asking too much for Meier and we aren't interested anymore". Leafs were going to try and passed, and the Devils are currently saying they won't give up what the sharks want. Not saying "this deal would absolutely happen" for the penguins, it's a what if with my logic being that other teams are starting to go away b/c the price.

I'm pretty sure he said he doesn't want to give up a first to dump cap - not necessarily that he doesn't want to give it up to get a better player. I mean - Meier obviously makes this team better this year. You can't really argue against that. Plus getting a top 6 winger makes the bottom 6 better by default. And it's really just the 3rd line that's the issue - the 4th line of Poehling/Blueger/Archibald is more than fine.

Roll out Meier/Malkin/Kapanen as your 2nd line and Zucker/DOC/Rust as your 3rd. Idk, in my opinion if you're trading for a big name player - might as well go all in

Able to and willing to are two completely different things. No way should the pens be offering their first unless it’s lottery protected. And since they are essentially “selling” by trading Zucker, they should absolutely be trading the kings 1st, not the pens 1st. The sharks would be nuts not to take that cause I don’t see any team offering that unless they have a contract extension in place because his QO is awful.
