He's made a ton of money, could even see him taking a lower AAV with more term on a hometown discount and NMC to just settle his family in Toronto for good. Thought 5M was safe in case not given his season so far.

i'm hoping they give ROR Willy, and run essentially 3 first lines. Matthews played with inexperienced grinders/middle 6 players for quite some time in his first few years and can still produce, ROR I think needs Willy to kick start some offense again this year.

I can see ROR extending 2-3 years for something like 3.5-4.5m a year. Would be a nice discount. At 5m a year I think he prices himself out of Toronto.

Just because a team acquires an upcoming UFA, doesn't mean they have to resign him. ROR for three more years? Is that going to good value.

no we don't have to, I was just seeing if it was feasible on what I believe to be the high end of an AAV for a ROR extension in Toronto. I'd like him back at the right price though, players with complete games like him don't ever become completely useless even if they are paid a bit more than they should, and actually often age quite well.

5M was what I see as teh absolute high case for him re-signing, just wanted to see if it could be done. My guess would be in the 4-4.5 range unless they did some crazy term and a low AAV
