Pageau's has 4 years left vs. Ceci 3 and Puljujarvi has no term left to me he's not a cap dump. A fair trade would be Mayfield for oilers 2023 2nd.
Mayfield's value should be similar to what Josh Manson got last year - they're both big, physical RHD in their walk years. The big difference to me is Manson cost $2.05M with retention and Mayfield's cap hit is only $1.45M. Manson got a 2nd & Drew Helleson (recent #47 OA pick) at last year's deadline; I'd argue that the 2nd & Schaefer (recent #32 OA pick) is fair value based on the recent comp.
That would mean the rest of the deal is JG Pageau with 4x$1M retention for Cody Ceci (3x$3.25M left), Puljujarvi (1x$3M left), and next year's 2nd. Pageau's basically been a 40-45 point player with the Islanders, a top PKer, and a strong defensive 3C - I agree he's probably worth more along the lines of $3.5-4M on the open market, which is what he's retained down to here.
Getting him retained down market value for a 2nd is fair, to me - but when you can't do the trade without sending back two $3M+ contracts, I think there needs to be more value going to the Islanders. Puljujarvi is barely replacement level, and Ceci is a bottom pair D being paid like a middle pair guy - they're both bad contracts at this point that Edmonton can't afford to keep on their books if they're trying to add any impact players at the deadline. Cap space is worth its weight in gold, and getting $4M in retention while also dumping off $12.75M worth of bad contracts isn't something a team is going to do out of the kindness of their hearts.
