It would seem weird to me that a team that hasn't cared about having picks or prospects since Lou came around, would suddenly shift that philosphy with a month and a half left in the season.

Isles would pass on this. I think Schaefer & a 2nd is proper value for Mayfield; but taking back Ceci & Pool Party + a partially retained JGP feels like more than a 2nd round's worth of value. Ceci has two more years of a $3.25M cap hit but wouldn't be any better than RD3 on the Isles. so to New York he's a borderline cap dump. Combine that with the fact that there's no ready-made replacement for Pageau in the Isles organization, I think NY would want more coming back.

Seems like from what I see on this site JGP has a wide range of value amongst Isles fans, some wanting to dump him. Obviously JP is only to make money work for us. I did this trade only if Isles fall out of contention and maybe they are wanting some picks and Ceci can play a bit so maybe Lou thinks he can help them next year to compete as well.

I would be open to sending some additional picks/prospects as Oil need a R handed center who can win some faceoffs and play defense.

No way Oilers give that return for a cap dump like Pageau!

and what are Ceci & Puljujarvi to the Islanders in this deal? You're dumping 2 bad deals and taking one back, why would the Isles do that without being compensated for it?

Pageau's has 4 years left vs. Ceci 3 and Puljujarvi has no term left to me he's not a cap dump. A fair trade would be Mayfield for oilers 2023 2nd.

a Defensive right handed centre who wins faceoffs and has 30 points this year already...sounds like exactly what Oilers need. at $4M thats value in my mind

Mayfield's value should be similar to what Josh Manson got last year - they're both big, physical RHD in their walk years. The big difference to me is Manson cost $2.05M with retention and Mayfield's cap hit is only $1.45M. Manson got a 2nd & Drew Helleson (recent #47 OA pick) at last year's deadline; I'd argue that the 2nd & Schaefer (recent #32 OA pick) is fair value based on the recent comp.

That would mean the rest of the deal is JG Pageau with 4x$1M retention for Cody Ceci (3x$3.25M left), Puljujarvi (1x$3M left), and next year's 2nd. Pageau's basically been a 40-45 point player with the Islanders, a top PKer, and a strong defensive 3C - I agree he's probably worth more along the lines of $3.5-4M on the open market, which is what he's retained down to here.

Getting him retained down market value for a 2nd is fair, to me - but when you can't do the trade without sending back two $3M+ contracts, I think there needs to be more value going to the Islanders. Puljujarvi is barely replacement level, and Ceci is a bottom pair D being paid like a middle pair guy - they're both bad contracts at this point that Edmonton can't afford to keep on their books if they're trying to add any impact players at the deadline. Cap space is worth its weight in gold, and getting $4M in retention while also dumping off $12.75M worth of bad contracts isn't something a team is going to do out of the kindness of their hearts.

Ceci plays on top pairing most of the time with the Oilers so he's on a value deal to me.

Ceci has played 1RD reasonably well for the Oilers for the past 1.4 seasons, how is he a cap dump?

But you're trading him to a team with Ryan Pulock & Noah Dobson - on the Islanders, he's a third pair guy making $3.25M for the next 3 seasons. There's no way that they would value him as anything more than cap you're sending back to offset the deal when he's not going to kick either of those two guys out of their lineup spots.

Mayfield isn't as good as Manson and the package above is richer than what Colorado paid. Not a fair deal at all.

see above: he's third pair on the Islanders behind Pulock & Dobson. $3.25M is more than double what they're paying Scott Mayfield for those minutes, and more than I'd assume they'd spend on a replacement RD3 this summer to replace him.

Mayfield's put up 5-9-14 in 57 GP, averaging 20:50 per night. His offensive GSVA is slightly better than what Manson's was last season when he was traded, and his defensive GSVA is basically the same. Go to their hockeydb pages, they're nearly identical in terms of career production at the time Manson was traded last year. The only difference is that Mayfield also has 51 playoff GP as a top 4 guy under his belt compared to Manson's 22. When you add in the fact that Mayfield's full cap hit is $1.45M, and Manson's retained cap hit was still $600K higher, I don't see why there would be a difference in their package. If you want to quibble over the values of Drew Helleson vs. Reid Schaefer, fine, but that's really the only difference in the potential packages here.
