Problem is the team is not as deep as it was last year. Losing Strome, Copp, Vatrano and Motte was huge. Our fwd depth is awful. The 5 on 5 scoring is nonexistent and an issue come playoff time. It’s not about being down on the team, the problem is the expensive contracts that have and will continue to cripple the ability to add quality depth players to complement the roster and fill it out for the playoffs. Just getting to the playoffs is pretty much worthless imo if that’s the objective. This team was most definitely better last year and I can’t see how anyone can deny that.
Worse roster than last year? Maybe. But your expectations are sky high, right now. You only lost Strome, the rest were rentals. But you neglect how much better guys like Chytil, Laf, and Kakko are playing this year. Are the Rangers playing a bit worse than last year, overall? Debatable. They are still in very good playoff position and have almost half of the season left to go. But, the point still remains, on paper, they are a good team and they are producing results that are favorable. You are thinking about "getting into the playoffs" all wrong. This is still a very good team and the playoffs are a completely different beast. It is a whole new game once you get in.
You gotta think big picture, but even in the small picture, the Rangers still have a good shot at a cup this year. In 2010, CHI faced a Flyers team for the stanley cup that was the last seed in the Eastern conference. Last year FLA tore apart the league in the regular season but couldn't even make it to the conference final and probably won't even make the playoffs this year. This league is too close to blow small details out of proportion.
