I really think one year deals for Byram and Newhook are in all parties worst interest.

3 years is pretty long for Toews imo. Id prefer a 1 or 2 year deal with a low cap hit which has performance bonuses to increase salary, kinda like Bergeron and Krejci

I would like EJ back for another year. Around 1m for a 3rd pair rhd with load management.

They are RFAs without arb. Salary cap not going up very much. $4M seems to be the sweet spot to spend on 2C, like Toews or Rodrigues. 4 & 18 can get big raises, and hopefully big contracts the next season, with a bigger cap.
RN, I'm not sure you can say "definitely" trade Girard away to make room for either 4 or 18 on a big contract. IMO

If Byram is the stud you think he is getting him locked in to that price for as long as possible is so much more beneficial to the team than be redoing the contract again in a year, and it’s in his best interest to get the job security, a one year deal doesn’t do anything except kick the can down the road. Also with Newhook you either think he is a 2C or not. If you do, locking him in at say 3x3 gives you more cap flexibility short term, gives him some added security.
