Description

For obvious reasons, both Anaheim and New Jersey want to make this deal as soon as possible.

We use our two remaining retention slots on Klingberg (fingers crossed) and whichever veteran we can trade for significant value. I'd just as soon keep Kevin Shattenkirk because I don't think that his trade value is high even with 50% retention.

this doesn't include (i don't believe) what the sharks would be getting from NJ for meier, just what anaheim would get for retaining

Right. The assumption is that New Jersey and San Jose come to some trade agreement like the one that has been widely speculated the past two weeks, and the further assumption is that New Jersey wants and needs to have some sort of cap offset to effectuate it. I don't think that San Jose is in a position to retain 50% on Meier.

I believe he is only pricing the cap hits. The return for Meier from NJD isn't shown.

sharks could theoretically retain 50% on the last year of his deal and take back Johnson, and still be cap compliant.

Yeah. The return is something along the lines that you proposed in your excellent ACGM earlier today offering comparables, which is what got me to be thinking about this in the first place.

I guess the question is why is San Jose not retaining themselves? Are NJ and SJ so against the cap that there isn't the room to do so?
