Description
This is based on cap going to 83500000 in 23/24 and then 8750000 in 24/25 (though it could be higher depending but this seems like a safe estimate)

In 22/23 deadline, leafs traded for Meier and then signed him to 8 year at 9AAV. This is to see how that would then play out. Year 1 of the extension is here https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/edit/3827147

This is the year it gets tricky. With having Marner and JT on last year of deals, plus resigning AT and Willy, then adding Meier it is a tight year. Hopefully, past picks are ready to come in and play for cheap and Leafs get value out of second year of Holmberg, Anderson, and Knies. Robertson would have developed more and past picks Amirov (assuming health), Minten, and Hirvonen are ready. If not, I bet we could find players at low end to take on roles for league min like we did with Kampf and Bunting.

For Sandin and Liligren, we bridge again knowing they can have bigger paydays down the road. If it needs to be 2 year deals instead of 3, I am fine with that.

The year after, even thought Marner needs a raise, would be end the logjam with JT 11 million off plus a cap increase would allow us to fill out the roster more. In the past, before pandemic, we could always bank on an increase in cap. Having our top 4 forwards all signed would allow us to slowly add as the cap increases.

I think this would be a huge pinch year in terms of salary. At some point we will need to hope the prospects pan out.

There’s no way Bunting sees Mikheyevs 5 million dollar contract and says I’m worth 3. Sure there’s term, but he’s going to get 5-7 million on his next deal.

Agreed, it is possible he moves off at doesnt take that. If so, Leafs use the money on another player for that. The hope would be a hometown discount plus most of the money upfront for a signing bonus. The deal would take him to he is 35 so that is good security. Ilya's contract value was 19 and Buntings would be 24, though as you said less term.

Totally different situations; Bunting is a home town kid. Nick Paul just signed 7 x $3.1M so he’d have chances to win. Hopefully Bunting prioritizes winning for his home team; I’d go up to $4Mx6 or $3.875Mx7 (heavily front loaded with bonuses) which is good value on both sides

I think Paul is a good comparable here for him. But either way, the leafs would be able to fit Meier onto the team and squeeze elsewhere. I am sure the Leafs could attract someone to join that top six and bring scoring/energy. Maybe Knies would be able to hit that spot
bogdown a aimé ceci.

Added in randome 'Depth' pieces that would help round out the team. No idea who is available but I think this shows Meier would be able to be added in without destroying our cap. Moving forward, having him with Willy, MM, and AM would allow for another top player as JT would start to decline.

The usual LeafFANATIC posts. Signing a"star" but expecting so many to take massive cuts., Not much realism at all.

I think the hope and plan is to have Knies a decent top 6 contributor next year and beyond. He's going to cost far less and allow for much better depth which is a wiser plan. TO already has one of the best top 6's in the league. Finding some more offence in the bottom 6 would make more sense. They of course would have to be great defensively as well. Plus allows better depth options or more flexibility to meet Sandin, Liljegren and Timmins next contracts which will be above 4 if they continue to progress.

Just in general, it doesn't seem all that sustainable to have 56 million in cap tied up in the first two lines.

I think overall this shows that while tight, and perhaps not the best allocation of resources, it is possible to trade and sign for Meier. Leafs would have a weaker bottom 6, but Dubas has showed an ability to get cheap players here and a desire to aquire top talent, so it is possible. But as some have said, not likely. I do think there is a good chance by this year several of the leafs players pan out and Dubas' drafts stare to pay dividends. It really makes you think how the Hunter drafts have not provided much of any depth outside of the first round.
