Highly unlikely the Canes trade Kotkaniemi, almost no chance they trade Morrow.

Zero chance they trade either for a rental

They should be looking at every opportunity to get out from under that anchor of a contract

I think they would view moving kotkaniemi as a huge positive.

His buyout would be quite cheap. Much easier to swallow than paying assets to be rid of him, which they don’t do anyway.

They didn’t give him 8yrs to deal him 1/3 of a season into year 1.

Less than a 1% of cap. Like I said, much more manageable than paying to be rid of him, which they’re unlikely to do anyway. He’s probably the eventual Staal replacement as the 3C.

To be frank, so what?

Sure the Canes want more out of Kotkaniemi, they’re betting on him getting better, that’s the whole point of gambling on the signing anyway. They’re not going to cut bait 30games in.

They also don’t pony up for rentals.

You shouldn't though, because the team as is isn't bad enough to tank, so that means they probably shouldn't do a scorching of the earth

It might be a while before 4.82M against the cap looks palatable for a strictly defensive 3C that doesn't do much offensively

Yeah, they gave up a former 3rd round selection, a former second round selection turned bust, and a 6th. What the comment was intended to relay was that the Canes don’t pony up prime assets for rentals. A prospect selected in the 3rd round isn’t exactly a prime asset when there aren’t any expectations of him yet.

They gave up a Aidan Hreschuk for Domi. I hardly call that “ponying up” more like bargain bin shopping,

The biggest “futures” asset the Canes have given up for a rental was a 2nd round pick in 2005-06 to bring Mark Recchi to the Canes. Besides, under the current management, the Canes have only traded for a rental a couple of times: Domi, Hakanpaa, Vatanen, and Pacquette. None of those trades sent prime assets the other way. The only times the Canes have moved first round picks have been either for a player with term or for a player that proceeds to resign long term. They don’t trade first round picks or prime assets for rentals, and they value their own picks a lot higher than other teams would value their picks. Florida was so willing to shell out their high picks, and now they are stuck in limbo essentially.

Sorry, are you telling me they didn't spend prime assets to get Vatanen?

Claesson, Koukkanen, and a 3rd round pick for Vatanen half retained. What about those assets going to the Devils screams “prime asset”?

Ya, this isn’t ponying up.

Do we really need to walk through the situation around the kotkaniemi signing? We all know the story. We all know that they’re regretting that contract big time. We all know they would be thrilled to be rid of it. This is seven years of a cap dump, a very good, but very unproven prospect for bo horvat. Honestly i think it would take more than morrow just to move the contract.

Regardless of Kotkaniemi’s performance in year 1 of his deal, they’re not going to cut bait so soon. It’s not what they do. If he’s still a 30pt F in a year or 2, they’ll just buy him out. Zero need to pay assets to be rid of him.

Do they really want a cap hit for him until 2036?
