Description
Philly is said to be considering buying out Hayes. What if the Avs trade for him instead? They get a big-bodied C that is still productive - though oft-injured - at a deep discount while Philly gets something of value in return rather than nothing.

I might do this is i was Philly if Compher wasnt on an expiring contract. I still might do this if i was philly tho. Probably wont happen cause they need Hayes' production, even tho theyd be better off tanking this year for a high pick in the draft, and shedding cap for the future.

Even max retention I don't want Hayes. He is too slow to play in the Avs system

JTC won't cost much more than he's making now to re-sign (definitely won't take up as much space as Hayes) and can be a decent middle-six player that plays in all situations. If I'm Philly, I would try to tank to get a high pick in a strong draft but Fletcher is sort of a dumba$$ so good luck.

I am a huge Compher fan. I used to watch him when he played at U of M and have always liked his game. I think he's a fine 2C depending on a teams construction, but I can understand Avs fans wanting to upgrade the two hole.

That's a concern but the value is there for a good player. All things considered, I'm not sure the Avs can be overly picky about which players come their way if they really think they need a 2C.

That being said, I'm not sure they're going to get splashy this year. There really isn't the desperation on the part of the team that some fans and media types think there is; I can see them going after 4th line and 3rd pair types that don't cost them much then just tinkering with the top six until they find something that works without making big roster additions. Plus, they don't have a lot of assets to spend and they want to keep the window open as long as possible; trading away big assets will hinder that goal.

He's been a consistent, durable player for the Avs but he isn't exactly a 2C on this type of team. He would probably do fine under Torts.

It's not the cta that bothers me. Value is good. I just don't think a slow 30 year old with term is a smart move for the Avs. It comes down to the main fact I don't see Hayes as a 2c on the Avs and would slow down his wingers or take dumb "I got beat" penalties. If there was no term or just one year left, I would be all over it.
I agree with your 2nd point.

Obviously as a Philly fan I’ve seen every game this season and have been watching Hayes closely.

Here’s the facts:
- He is healthy and has been since late last season
- He’s producing at a near pt-per-game pace (9-19-28 in 29) and has maintained that pace from the very start
- His style is slow and methodical, similar to van Riemsdyk, but he’s not necessarily a slow skater
- His ability to control and protect the puck is very solid
- His methodical approach does not usually bode well in 3-on-3 OT
- He often looks for the pass- which could be very beneficial if playing on a unit with elite talent like MacKinnon and Makar, or frustrating when he elects to pass instead of taking the shot
- Great locker room guy who lifts those around him

Take these as you will. Obviously I wouldn’t expect a lot of interest with his current contract, but at 30-50% retained, I think you’re getting a VERY solid player that holds more value than most might think.

That's fair to not see him as a 2C on the Avs - they play with pace and if Hayes doesn't fit that, it might not work.

Gonna focus on these two facts. Kaut gets benched and sent down for being this type of player. I get Hayes is putting up points and that means a lot but Bednar will bench him or just underplay him. At 3.5m it's a lot to spend on someone in the dog house

Kaut was benched for inconsistent performance and effort. Hayes is nowhere near the bench. Dude is the leading scorer and plays more than almost anyone on the Flyers. He'd look good with Landy and Nuke imo.

I'm not sure comparing Hayes and Kaut is exactly fair. Hayes is an established NHLer, Kaut is a prospect. Assuming that they would get treated the same way, played in the same situations and produce the same results seems off the mark to me.

Effort isn't something we can truthfully comment on unless we are right there on the bench. A problem with players like them where they are not slow, but they take a lot of strides ot get up to speed and play a more methodical method which looks like lack of effort when playing with high tempo players(and Beds demands that tempo).

I do think we need to see the team healthy before anything happens but that isn't going to occur until late January at the earliest (if it ever happens). Ultimately, this team is not as desperate as some people seem to think it is and we likely won't see any big moves regardless of what happens with the injuries.

I'm just going by Bednar's comments to the press. That's the reason he gave.

I would like that, and I do think that may be the plan. Adding a good forward for cheap could be a good move though regardless. If it's Hayes, as it is here, then he could also fit on the third line and create more depth. I actually think a playmaker would be welcome there.

I never said they would produce the same if given the same deployment... Comparing their style of play and how much Bednar hates it, is a fair comp. Look at time of ice for Hayes, Beds won't be playing Hayes 19min a game when his wingers have to either wait for him to catch up or slow their attack. It's something that goes against the Avs current plan of attack.

Another play driver would be nice. Doesnt have to be anything super big. I think they need ot be cautious moving out remaining assets
