A late 1st in a better draft still pales in comparison to 7th OA. For the sake of argument lets say the standings dont change and Toronto finishes 2nd in the division but 1st amoung non division winners, then in the playoffs they are knocked out before the conference finals at some point. They would be picking at latest 28th and at earliest 24th. 2015 and 2016 were the last years we had comparable to this draft year. Players drafted between 24-28 in those years were Konecny, Roslovic, Juulsen, J. Larson, and Beauvillier for 2015, and M. Jones, Tuftle, Thompson, B. Howden, and L. Johansen for 2016. By comparison a recent draft that was viewed as relatively weak was 2018 where Quinn Hughes was selected 7th OA.
While Tage and Konecney are starting to make names for themselves they are still quite a bit behind Hughes in raw skill. Even then that late 1st would have to be that late home run instead of any of the other mediocre players to misses named above.
