I really want to know what kind of metric, or stat, or whatever you're using to back this point up.
Reilly played 10 games before being sent down (again). He averaged 16:44 every night, started nearly 70% of his shifts in the O-zone *and * got PP2 time, and managed one secondary assist in that time.
Parise has played 17 games for the Islanders, nearly matches Reilly in TOI despite being a forward (16:30), plays all 3 phases (1:33 PP TOI/2:35 PK TOI), starts 56% of his time in the defensive zone, and still has 5 goals and 8 points in that time.
And once again, Parise is outplaying Reilly's numbers while literally costing 1/4 of the cap. Even if the two had *identical* numbers, Parise would be more valuable in a flat-cap world. The fact that his production is that much stronger than Reilly's makes it a slam-dunk that he's the more valuable player. If you have -anything- you can bring to contradict that point, by all means, do so - but I'm going to guess that you don't have anything because there really isn't anything that would back that up.
A 10-15 game sample size is too short (unless you want to say Kirby Dach is better than Ryan O'Reilly). A 100+ game sample size is better so let's use the past two seasons.
Using Wins Above Replacement, Goals Above Replacement and Standing Points Above Replacement from Evolving-Hockey:
Reilly
20-21: 55 GP, 9 GAR, 1.6 WAR, 3 SPAR
4.5 Expected GAR, 0.8 Expected WAR, 1.5 Expected SPAR
Value $6.8M
21-22: 70 GP, 2.3 GAR, 0.4 WAR, 0.8 SPAR
5.3 xGAR, 0.9 xWAR, 1.8 xSPAR
Value: $1.4M
Parise
20-21: 45 GP, 4.7 GAR, 0.8 WAR, 1.6 SPAR
0.8 xGAR, 0.1 xWAR, 0.3 xSPAR
Value: $2.7M
21-22: 82 GP, 4.1 GAR, 0.7 WAR, 1.4 SPAR
1.6 xGAR, 0.3 xWAR, 0.5 xSPAR
Value: $2.6M
Combined:
Reilly: 125 GP, 11.3 GAR, 2 WAR, 3.8 SPAR, 9.8 xGAR, 1.7 xWAR, 3.3 xSPAR
Parise: 127 GP, 8.8 GAR, 1.5 WAR, 3 SPAR, 2.4 xGAR, 0.4 xWAR, 0.8 xSPAR
Reilly has been more valuable over the past two seasons. Reilly is only in the AHL because of Bruins' cap issues and their questionable decision to waive him over other players but he's a great 3rd pair, fringe 2nd pair D. I hope Parise is 0.50 pts/GP while playing with Barzal which is not his actual level of play (1st liner). Reilly would crush it too if he played with McAvoy.
