No chance SJ is going to retain 50% of Karlsson's $11.5 mil/year for the the next 5 years.

So the leafs get Karlsson at a $5.75 mil aav (half retention). He is currently leads defenseman in scoring and is 2nd in the league with 10 goals. He’s on a 113 point pace this year. At that price Karlsson is ridiculously undervalued in this trade.

But the Leafs would be throwing away a chunk of the future and regardless of how long he keeps this up, he is signed for a long time and not really that good defensively - which we need too.
