I've posted this trade a million times on here and believe it or not, most Sharks fans like the deal

so that tells me two things:

sharks fans are idiots
devils fans are idiots for unrelated reasons (thats the rangers fan talking btw)

i mean this is a weird kind of trade where Holtz is gonna be a superstar eventually (he's only played 13 games in the national hockey league) and Meier already sort of is. It should make sense for the Devils, cause they'd bring in a player who's already proven he can score 30 goals, maybe more, and it should also make sense for the Devils cause they're getting someone who should be an elite goal scorer for a while, but it also doesn't really make sense for either team cause the Devils aren't close enough to seriously competing to trade away such a promising prospect and Meier is already a pretty established player in San Jose. It's just kind of a weird trade, and that before mentioning the first or Johnsson

What ? You want a proven player who can score you need to trade an A prospect + in case that prospect doesnt pan out
Look at the Pacioretty vs Suzuki + Tatar + 2nd rd pick deal
Pacioretty was older than Meier and in need of a new contract
Holtz is a better prospect than Suzuki was at that time
I think the two trades above make sense for every teams involved
python3504, GMBL, Devsfan25 and 1 other person a aimé ceci.

I think you're thinking of NJ as a rebuilder still and San Jose as a playoff hopeful. If anything it's the other way around, I don't think SJ is officially a rebuilder but seems like they are moving that way, as for NJ the expectation probably last year was that they start moving towards contention. Otherwise, I don't see why they would have signed Hamilton and Palat. I would say that NJ is at least a playoff hopeful now.

NJ is a playoff hopeful, but not in their contending window yet. They have time to wait for Holtz, who'll be better for longer than Meier

I've actually kinda changed my mind on this trade, it's definitely in the Sharks favour

Yeah, NJ are playoff hopefuls but being a contender is probably the goal. The question is does Meier bring them any closer?

The trade is definitely going to need to be in the Sharks favor but that's just how trading established star players works. They need to get at least two opportunities to get a good player like Meier's or better. The above proposal though isn't that great for the Sharks, that's kind of like just settling for what they can get.
