20 man roster is all fun and games until 4 players get injured

With Simmonds no longer there to keep the flies off there will be more injuries to Leafs players. Opponents will be a lot more brave playing the Leafs. But the Leafs power play will be their enforcer. Right?

Update: Simmonds cleared waivers. So I guess he's still available if needed.

You can emergency recall in that situation. It wouldn't be an issue until you are playing away games which the Leafs aren't doing until the end of October and even then none of the games are back to back so a recall isn't much of an issue. The Leafs have time to figure it out. The last weekend of November would be the 1st time a player could get hurt in a game and it cause an issue with recalls.
