What happens when Patches is healthy? What is the extension that Horvat comes with? Horvat has to have a long term team friendly extension in place to give up that amount of assets.

Not discrediting Rathbone, who I like, but Necas could be a staple in the top 6, Morrow has the upside to be a top 4 RHD PP specialist.

This is the same argument as JT Miller…just Horvat is slightly younger.

There are ways to get pac back in the lineup when he's ready around February. If necessary it could involve moving bear out but there's a decent chance with other injuries throughout the year that wouldn't be necessary.

I like Rathbone and Morrow and they both have top 4 potential with PP time. Rathbone is NHL ready and provides additional depth right away. Necas is a good young player who I really like too and I think has potential to be a top 6 staple but Horvat is very well established and IMO gives them a much more stable roster for the playoffs and cup chase.

It is similar to the Miller situation but Horvat is a more reasonable age for Carolina and will likely be cheaper than Miller on a long term extension. They will have the cap room with pac contract coming off the books to re-sign Horvat if they choose. I think Horvat is the type of player that Rod would rely on heavily.

Ultimately this trade improves the roster in the short term. The long term is up for debate as to which team would come out better IMO.

So Horvat will sign a team friendly deal? 5 years at 6m AAV?

It's pretty obvious Patches is gonna get the Kucherov treatment no?

No it’s not obvious at all. The Canes are public ally already calling Patches their ‘internal trade deadline acquisition’. 100% not obvious and not likely. He sounds like he could be back in March.

Management has flat out already said that “Patches won’t be Kucherov’d”. I’m paraphrasing of course, but the general message was along those lines.

I would be open to a Horvat package involving Necas, but Morrow is still a dealbreaker. Canes won’t be moving someone who has the potential to win the Norris. And unless Horvat is coming with a 5x6mil AAV or something quite close to that, I can’t see the Canes even considering that. Besides, if the Canucks aren’t able to sign Horvat, Canes could just wait until the off-season and not given up anything.

Morrow has a long ways to go before I'd put him in any potential Norris winner category but I understand the sentiment he absolutely has high potential. I don't expect Carolina is willing to move him either but Canucks are going to be looking for a premium RD. With Carolina that's either Morrow or Pesce and they definitely aren't moving Pesce.

Horvat is probably looking at 6.5-7.5 AAV on an extension depending on term. The benefit to getting him now is:
1. He solidifies your 2C position for a cup run this season. I know you have options at 2C but all of them come with question marks where Bo is a proven 2C that I would envision Rod relying on heavily.
2. No guarantee he ends up in free agency and if he does whoever gets him will have to compete with 31 other teams and likely overpay.

Rathbone is no slouch either as a defense prospect and would provide immediate depth. It's up in the air who ends up having the better career between him and Morrow.

I don't think he will get moved either but I think they should move him unless he's signing an extremely team friendly deal. I don't like the idea of locking into both him and Miller long term with high AAVs. Bo is a bonafide 2C but Vancouver already has Miller and Petey at C which IMO makes Horvat somewhat expendable and more valuable to a team that does not have a bonafide 2C.

Well, if Vancouver is wanting a RHD for Horvat, the best you might be able to get from the Canes would be Heimosalmi. The Canes have no need for another C. The Canes are rolling KK as the 2C, and while it stands, Horvat is better than KK right now, and he would make the C core even better than it already is, but there is no need to overload the middle, and cause other aspects of the roster to get weakened. So unless Horvat is willing to sign an extremely team friendly deal, there likely isn’t a deal to be had, since the Canes don’t give up prime assets for rentals.

If I were to offer a package, the most I would be willing to offer would be Necas, Heimosalmi, and a 2024 first rounder for Horvat with a prearranged extension at 5x6.5mil.

Heimosalmi is too small and too much of a longshot to make the NHL plus Horvat won't sign for a contract like that.

I personally don't have confidence in KK being a 2C but I guess we will find out. IMO Carolina needs to solidify that 2C spot to have a real chance at the cup this year.

Maybe Horvat isn't the guy and Morrow isn't the piece to be traded but I think they will have to something before the deadline at that position. Maybe it's time they trade for a rental to go for it.

Really makes no sense imo for canes. necas price to term length is too low risk high reward given his potential ceiling, only thing j could see kove the needle on a necas trade to Nucks is Necas+ for Boeser

Heimosalmi being a long shot for the NHL? Now that’s rich. Just because Heimosalmi is 5’11” doesn’t mean he is too small, especially when there are smaller players in the league who have had lots of success. As for KK, nobody outside of Canes fans think KK will work out, even though the stats he put up last season are suggesting otherwise. A better P/60 than Nathan MacKinnon totally doesn’t sound like he will succeed. And he was doing that in a fourth line role with linemates who weren’t that offensively talented.

I mean heimosalmi is too small for the Canucks because we have quinn not that he is too small to play in the NHL. I say he's a longshot though because he did not have a strong season last year in the finish Liga which is often a league that dmen are able to put up pretty strong numbers. Not sure what he's shown to think he is more likely than not to make the NHL. He's an undersized 2nd round pick. It's more likely a guy like that doesn't make the NHL. He's still a decent prospect but long ways to go to be a guy knocking on the NHL door.

We will see with KK. Comparing him to MacKinnon is ridiculous though there are lots of sheltered players that put up strong P/60 numbers. I'd be willing to bet that KK never becomes a bonafide 2nd liner player but only time will tell.

Considering that offense isn’t Heimosalmi’s game, he had quite a good year. As for KK, I wasn’t comparing him to MacKinnon, especially since they aren’t comparable. I’m just pointing out KK has a better P/60 than MacKinnon, and was around the top of the league in that stat. Even in the small sample size where KK was playing as the 2C last season, he was putting up about a 1.5 PPG pace.

So you can bet all you want, you will probably end up regretting those bets. But I digress. I’ve had enough of this back and forth. But have a nice day. Good luck on those bets, since you will need that luck.

You’ve completely ignored Necas in this equation…He has potential to be a 70+ point player this year. I could make the argument that Necas is more valuable to the Canes in the next two years than Horvat could be ($3m x 2 bridge deal)

I'm not ignoring Necas but Horvat is clearly the better player right now and the more reliable player. The way I see it is the difference between Horvat and Necas balances out the difference between Rathbone and Morrow.

Again, missing the point. WHAT IF the difference between Horvat and Necas isn’t as big as you thing? What if Necas puts up 70 points playing in the top 6 this year? What if he proves he can play center as a righty? Different story, considering he’s younger and on a $3m deal during a cup window…

I get that but those are all 50/50 what ifs. Same could be said for the opposite. What if Necas has another underwhelming season, what if he's only a middle 6 winged. OR what if Horvat puts up 40 goals this year, what if horvats defensive game takes another step and becomes a selke candidate.

I'm not disagreeing that Necas has lots of potential but Horvat is currently the safer more reliable player where you know the base line is a bonafide 2C and PP goal scorer.

The trade is about creating a team that has a better chance at winning the cup now while potentially giving up future potential to an extent.
