Honestly, it's a good idea but I'm not sure about the practicality. If this happens I'd like to see a safety net pick coming back. But the reason Carolina would trade Bear is because they have Coghlan and Chatfield competing for the 6th D spot. Maybe if Brannstrom plays LD, it could make sense. Not sure though.

I figured it was surplus that is "forcing" him out. Brann can play LHD but he's played the majority of his younger career on the right. He's made strides last year on the left side but was handicapped by Zaitsev most of the time. That and DJ doesn't like small guys. But yeah, safety net on picks.

I don’t see the appeal for CAR. They are potentially trading Bear b/c they have too many D as is. They don’t need another that likely wouldn’t play over de Haan (probably signed soon).

I’d think the Canes are looking for a pick or waiver exempt prospect that wouldn’t take up a roster spot.

They have more RD than LD, for sure. A nice problem to have.

They have Burns, Pesce, Coghlan, Chatfield and Bear on the right, with Slavin Skjei and very likely de Haan on the left. They also may be soon soon be signing camp invite Grigori Dronov, a promising LD. I doubt LaJoie gets a call up this year barring catastrophic injuries.

It’s also important, I think, to point out with Gardiner going to LTIR, they don’t have to trade Bear for cap reasons. They evidently want to move him, but they don’t “have” to. So, they will be looking for some sort of positive value back for him. My prediction is that he’s dealt for a 3rd or equivalent B level prospect.
