Talbot just demanded a trade out of Minnesota because he wasn't going to be the clear cut starter in front of MAF, why on earth would he come here to be stuck behind Gibson, and why would ANA give up one of the best backups in the league last year for a 35 year old starting goalie we wont be resigning? If we trade Stolarz, it will be for something the Ducks need, and that is not a 35 year old goalie.

Maybe retain on Talbot and swap him to Toronto for Samsonov in a cap neutral swap.

    1. Stolarz is "stuck" behind Gibson.

    2. You probably won't re-sign Stolarz either.

    3. You'll need to stay above the cap floor when you move out Klingberg/Shattenkirk/Kulikov at the 2023 trade deadline.

    4. This exact trade happened before.

Unless Hamonic has a stellar season (which is possible, but not probable) there's no way someone is gonna pay a 3rd from him. You'll be luck to get a 4th or 5th...

    NSH isn't trading for Watson

    1. Former 1st round pick and Stanley Cup finalist with Nashville.

    2. He's maintained his sobriety since coming to Ottawa

    3. If you want to make the playoffs, you'll need to add depth.

None of that makes it so NSH wants Watson back

    1. Hamonic did not have a stellar season for the Islanders, but Calgary spent the 12th overall pick + two seconds on him anyway.

    2. Ottawa recently paid a 3rd for him.

    3. Getting a draft pick for Hamonic at the deadline isn't exactly far-fetched.

1: Yes, he is our backup, and our future starter is in the AHL
2: We might depending on our defenses development, to prevent Dostal from getting shelled as he enters the league.
3: We will be taking cap back on the deals when we ship guys out, otherwise the teams we are trading those guys to will not have the cap space to make the deal work.
4: Flyers made that trade because they wanted a veteran to work with Hart who already knew him, and Stolarz was considered expendable (fears of loosing him to waivers, health concerns, etc) Anaheim has no such need to train Dostal.

1/2/4. I have a feeling you're a little too optimistic on Dostal because goalies are very unpredictable when it comes to NHL success.

    3. Teams that are playoff bound would likely rather keep the roster players they currently have instead of give them up, especially if they have guys on LTIR.

    1. Stolarz doesn't have much trade value if any.

    2. Pierre Dorion's phone number would get blocked by Kyle Dubas if that happened.

Then that would be even more reason to hang onto Stolarz and not trade him for Talbot. We like him and he plays well for us, and the only thing we are getting out of the deal is taking on 2.4 mil in cap. If Talbot only had a league minimum salary and the rest of it was signing bonus which had already been paid it might have a shot at working, but the trade you are presenting has zero benefit over hanging onto Stolarz and signing some random UFA for the remainder of the season for cap reasons.

    what?

He is an overpayed 4th liner. It doesnt matter if he's sober now, we let him go for a reason.

Our depth is fine. Zach Sanford can do what he does for cheaper on the 4th line.

And for a 4th round pick? Yeah... okay
