I highly doubt that they trade him just because he remains unsigned. There would have to be a 1C that they could get with him, but which team is going to take that risk. They could trade him as a rental and get a good haul but not good enough for them to be competitive now. The other option might be trading him for Pastrnak if he's also unsigned, but they wouldn't do that unless Pasta agrees to an extension.

So the deal is, we are pretty loaded at left d. Johnson is a flight risk, he's a ufa next August if he doesn't sign. We do get a second round pick as compensation if he walks. So I expect the pens second to be later than the compensation pick would be, but pettersson does have value too. The Sabres could move pettersson at the deadline, unfortunately with two additional years, they wouldn't be retaining. Honestly, he's somewhere between our 5th-10th best prospect, but we have a lot of good prospects. I would love to trade him for a solid right d prospect (defensive d), that's a reach right now unfortunately. So if pettersson has positive value at the trade deadline, plus the pens pick, it's not a bad deal for buffalo. IMHO.

Who is Pettersson shoving out though. Lose a year of development from Bryson and you have Pilut who just signed, just to shove some guy into the line up that you plan on flipping at the deadline

You make a good point. Pettersson would likely be an upgrade over bryson/pilut/clague, plus I suspect jokiharjus game looks better with a defensive d. The biggest problem I see with this, is pettersson at 4m isn't gonna have as much of a market at the deadline, and there is no chance I'd retain with 2 additional years on his contract.

Bryson was not that bad, idk why youd consider him depth dman. Hes cheaper, a year and a half younger and last year was his first "full" season. Pettersson isnt that much of an upgrade and has 3 years left on a bit of a over paid contract
