Description
RFA contracts worth the wait for sure, more term would've been great for Dobson but the cap hit is great and gives him a chance to prove he wasn't playing over his head last season. Romanov's deal is perfect for what he has done in the NHL so far and could be a steal a year or two in. Bellows' deal suggests he's going to be a regular piece in the lineup and given how he's played when he has gotten into games, I think he's earned it.

$2.7 million in cap space is waaaaaaay too much to go into the season with imo, especially since no external upgrades were made to the forward core, which definitely could use a shot in the arm (although I'm higher on it as is than most). Hoping for Milano or Stastny to bring in as depth.

The key this year will be getting Barzal, Beauvillier and Wahlstrom right. The former two had the worst years of their career last season, while the latter didn't really build on a strong rookie year. If they get back to what we know they can be, plus Nelson, Lee and Palmieri continuing their play from the second half, this forward core will improve and this team will be in the playoffs.

I feel like I wouldn't want to play this team in the playoffs. It'll be interesting to see what Lambert gets out of them. I think they're still a very good team. They never quite recovered from playing all those road games to start last season.

I wonder if Martin or Clutter will go on LTIR, allowing Bellows to be a regular

Eh I would rather bellows or Parise go on LW4. Bailey is pretty useless now but he can still produce 30-45 points. Get him to 1000 games than trade him

Having the cap space going into the season is a goo thing since it will accrue during the season and allow the Isles to add a player at the TDL that other teams may not be able too with their cap.

Yeah, there's always someone who is randomly hurt to start the year. Clutterbuck had shoulder surgery in the spring and I'm not sure if it's been confirmed he'll be ready. Of course, I'm not against either of them being straight up healthy scratched, but that seems unlikely, at least to start

That doesn’t work if they aren’t injured

Maybe. Bellows could be an interesting fit on the 4th line, he finishes his checks and is a hard worker, despite not being the strongest imo. I still think he's being underutilized in that role, even though management and coaching value our 4th line differently than other teams. His offensive tools are too intriguing to confine to that role.

Parise on the other hand I think will regress more this year, potentially making the 4th line the best place for him. But if he keeps up his play from last year, he's hands-down a middle-6er and an important part of the offense imo. Maybe that says more about our roster as it's constructed than it does about him, but he was really great last season and produced on every line he was on

Clutter is at least replacement level, but Martin might not even be AHL caliber at this point. Team worked so hard to change the culture, giving Martin a job just because seems like a bad idea when there are better players on the roster. It’s not like Martin still provides value, he’s just not a professional level hockey play anymore.

True, although you want to be in a position to trade for players at the deadline; that cap space won't do you much good if you're running a .500 record like last season. Of course, it's kinda unlikely that a Sonny Milano or a Paul Stastny are the difference between us being mid and being a playoff team, but if there's a move to be made now that they think could improve us for the first 60 games instead of waiting until the last 20, I'm glad we have the flexibility to do it and I hope they take advantage of it

Maybe things will be different with Lambert but one of my least favorite things about this team over the last two seasons is how obvious it's been that the 4th line is absolutely cooked and how much they continue to praise/value it on and off the ice. Collectively, they have like one strong game out of 10. You would think that instead of running them into the ground every night, they would look to evolve and build an even better version of them, but they don't unless they're forced to and then they run right back to them. Truly hope this changes under Lambert since they were such a massive asset in 18-19 and 19-20

Cizikas used to be a great 3C, but he has fallen off a cliff. Martin is cooked and clutterbuck is ok. The issue is they went from being great on the forecheck to spending most of their ice time scrambling in the defensive zone. They actually lose momentum for the isles because they have become so easy to play against.

I really hope they put Bailey down there and just play that line 5 min per game. Let the top 9 get most of the ice time like a normal team does
