Is this not extremely similar to what TB did a few years ago? Doesn't his cap hit only count if he is active during the regular season? They are both expiring contracts as well. Maybe I misunderstood how it happened

Because he is scheduled to come back around the halfway through the season. If you are ready to come back that early, you can’t be stashed there the entire year till playoffs. Tampa was shady with kuch being ready a few weeks before he came back. Patches would be 4+ months.

No. LTIR only stays in effect for the time the player is out and there's no prorated amount. When the player comes back, so does 100% of his cap hit. LTIR is in essence designed so you can space to call players up during an injury.

Best case scenario right now is after the all-star break...which could easily be a bit optimistic for an achellies injury, but I guess we will see what happens

Towes and Kane are not being traded until or near the tdl because of their ufa status next their contracts will be prorated and most likely hawks will retain 50% on both to move them and make money. But by hawks retaining 50% it does come at a cost.
