To play for his hometown team? To play in a market where he would be appreciated? To play in a market that saves him millions? Playing in arizona with the current contract he is under would result in him taking home more money after taxes with a salary of 10m than his current salary of 11m and some change. He is losing roughly a million dollars per year to play in Canada. Face it, when you are making taking a pay cut to play in Canada and you’re American, you would also leave the first chance you got to play in the states. The only way matthews stays in Toronto is if they offer him a salary that is better after taxes than an American team and they would have to offer over 2 million more in AAV to keep him than the next highest American bidder. Face it, he may not go to arizona but he sure as hell isn’t staying in Toronto. You have two more seasons to win with the current core, make the most of it.
so hes a sellout that doesnt care about winning lmao? appreciated!? hes the king of the biggest hockey city in the world, loves it here, way better team than az, an actual NHL rink. you small market teams just dont get it. he makes up that money in endorsements that he couldnt get in AZ or any smaller market team, you cant compare tkachuk and gaudreau because A, matthews is in a tottaly different stratosphere then those 2 and B Toronto and calgary are nothing alike.
youre just throwing crap at the wall and hope it sticks, theres barely any teams that will have teh cap for him that could also compete, he wont even make it to free agency. there has been NOTHIng to suggest hes leaving,
id put more money on AHO leaving, he already signed an offer sheet and he probably wants to play in a bigger and better market
