Pittsburgh is going to have a long cold rebuild after the core group is finished.

I mean when you make the playoffs around 20 times in a row (by the end of the streak) that is bound to happen. The team hasn’t missed the playoffs in my time watching them so I can’t complain.

I really don’t think a “long cold rebuild” is the best description. In say three years when they are done with the playoffs they will have Pickering + Blomqvist + a few other decent prospects Poulin/Broz/Hallander + 3 more first round picks - Hextall has shown a fetish for first round picks and I really don’t see him trading one, he has shown his plan is keeping the team competitive while building the future. There will be a rebuild but it won’t be a 5-7 year long affair. They will already have the ground work set up, they will just need a few years of top 5 picks to establish some top end offensive talent. I mean, their LD and G of the future might already be done with Pickering POJ and Ty Smith on the left side and Blomqvist ( and maybe even Jarry in net who is still pretty young, if he is OK going through the rebuild).

I’d say Pickering and Blomqvist are building blocks potentially. Legaré Poulin and POJ are complementary pieces. Ty Smith I would have little use for. Not a fan really. It’ll take 3-5 years of top 5 picks and then it’ll take another few years before they establish themselves in the NHL. Still a 5+ year time frame.

Oh yeah I wasn’t counting the time when you are transitioning out of the rebuild. So 3 more years of competing —-> 3 years of top 5 picks —> start building it back up. That’s what I hope
