early 3rd in a good draft doesn't seem that bad for only retaining $2.625m for a year.

Look at every trade that’s happened this off-season where a team with cap used it to get an asset. $3M cap is worth so much more than a third

maybe if it was accompanied by $3m in payments too. i dont think this is that far off.

It’s not about can they do it. It’s that they could get more if they wanted to wield their cap for assets, because there are many teams needing to move cap and not many willing to take it. Not out here doing favors for Toronto getting back a third rounder who has like a 10% chance of becoming an NHLer

Moving $3M in cap for Kassian for 2 years cost Edmonton a 2nd, third, and moving back in the first, and Kassian will actually play for Arizona and is good in his role.

CBJ moved Bjork for pennies because they didn’t want to spend the 1st round pick+ to move 1 year of Nyquist at $5.5M

VGK took nothing at all in return for Pacioretty etc etc etc

You're grossly overestimating the value of cap space because other teams needed to get compliant ASAP.

well the kassian trade has 2 years instead of one. $3.2m cap hit vs $2.625m, and $6m in cash vs $725k. the 2nd and 3rd are going to be late picks too. instead of an early one like i used and they are 2024 and 2025 picks so the draft isn't as good and you have to wait 1 and 2 years longer to get the asset.

not sure what the deal is on columbus. i haven't heard any rumors.

I think if it was at the trade deadline a 3rd probably gets it done but before the season starts I would think the ducks would want a little more to help out the leafs. Price isn't so much about the actual salary or the cap hit but rather making sure they don't make other teams better for nothing.

i think yotes or buffalo would jump at that. 725k for an early 3rd in a good draft is year is a good deal.

I agree but I think for only a third they would probably want to wait until the deadline and see if they could get something better for one of their retention slots. Unlike the leafs they would be in absolutely no rush to make a deal like this

no one really made use of the 3rd team retention last deadline. not sure they will this deadline.

yea but if retaining on Ghost bumps up the return from a 2nd to a 1st or makes Ladd or Okposo movable that may be a better use of a retention slot than a 3rd for this deal

yea 1 retention spot for ghost and maybe 1 for ritchie. i dont see a market for ladd even at half off. 1 for okposo and maybe 1 for hinostroza.

    A. Not for what the habs are doing
    B. When you pick first from waivwrs there's always good players who didn't have a spot on a contender available
