Description
“We gotta trade Muzzin”

“We gotta trade Kerfoot”

We all know Dubas isn’t doing this. Then we all dream up a fantasy trade that fixes it all. Well now I’ll do my own trades to fix this unbalanced team in cap hell. It’s not going to be “Kerfoot to Seattle for their 2nd rounder” or “Muzzin to LA just because “.

These are tough trades that change the way the team plays. They probably even lead to a new head coach, but they balance out this team and it’s absurd cap issues, as well as it’s lopsided slant toward scoring and relying on goaltending to save us (boy is that a really bad idea!)

Ideally I’d love to get rid of Murray and have a real goalie here but that’s so unrealistic I won’t even dream of it. I’m not making unrealistic garbage trades. They’ll all have explanations. Whine away all you want but it’s my take on getting this “best Leafs team ever” out of the freaking 1st round.

See you don’t take picks off teams that are building for the future. We send them a young goalie and two players that we can’t afford who will be beneficial to them to flip for picks come deadline time. We take a goalie off their hands that has proven he can be among the elite in the league but he is ready to play for a contender NOW, not in 3 years.

You don't trade players you just signed. So Samsonov and Clarke(from Calgary) both won't be on the move

if sandin could play either side of the ice, the leafs wouldn’t need to move him and find another RD

also, spending 10.5 million dollars on the worst starting goalie last year and the worst starting goalie over the last 3 years is certainly a choice

I like the trade for ottawa, would hate to see forms go but much easier to fill his role through trade/ what’s left in fa over what sadin provides, especially because he can play both sides of the ice

I thought of that but it was more to show my displeasure at our current goaltending fiasco

Grubauer was a Vezina finalist two years ago. Murray hasn’t been good since 2017, they aren’t comparable

You said about your moves "they balance out this team and it’s absurd cap issues, as well as it’s lopsided slant toward scoring", you traded the cheapest of the forwards for other role players. Just because the amount of money going around is more balanced doesn't mean you balanced the roster at all. Now you are relying on scoring from 3 11m players. If you Toronto were to want to "balance" things out more, trading Marner would make more sense, and replace him with a playmaker and an elite pker at the least, so you get 2x4-6m players or players who should be paid around that or more. Nylander at 7m isn't a top paid player for his production, so makes no sense to trade him to "balance" the roster.

Also, only one goalie can play a night, you don't spend 10m+ on goaltending between two goalies if one of them isn't 7m+.

murray had a .919 in 50 games in 18-19, i’d call that pretty good. But while murray’s collective body of work over the last 3 years was pretty bad, he was by far the best out of himself, grubauer, campbell, and mrazek last season, and grubauer’s 21-22 was far worse than any single season murray’s ever had. You don’t upgrade the goaltending by taking on last season’s worst goaltender at a full 5.9mil cap hit. While the murray trade was certainly a rare Dubas mega L, at least he had a positive GSAX and a better save percentage than the leafs as a team last year

There are 7 forwards in this lineup who are expected to be scorers (the top 6 plus Robertson). This forward group is defensively sound compared to what we currently have. Also, Grubauer is just a better option in net than Murray or Samsonov. I’m not going to throw the guy into a trash heap because he played a year on an expansion team.

Grubauer had one awful year on an awful expansion team. His career prior to that has been nothing short of very impressive. The idea that last season ruins him for good is ridiculous

I think Murray is a better goalie once he regains his swagger in Toronto.

this would be true if seattle played porous defense and hung him out to dry and we were only basing this on save percentage, but the beauty of GSAX is that it accounts for that. grubby f*cked up all on his own, usually by allowing a softie to squeak through on the first shot of the game. by all means trade for him, but you might as well start the game down 1-0 with him in net

Going with Grubauer is as much as a gamble as going with Samsonov and Murray, except you have way more money tied up. Robertson has one goal in the NHL he isn't proven. So you traded Nylander and didnt get sufficient replacements and you didn't put that money back into the team efficiently is what I am saying. If you are trading Nylander, better to get a cheaper alternative+work towards bolstering the defense with an upgrade. So like a young player that could produce line Nylander that only will take 3-4m.

Sandin doesn't want to play on the right side, which is one of the reasons why he hasn't signed and he wasn't good on the right side either. So, trading him to OTT doesn't really make sense.

Trading the goalies now wouldn't make any sense, so based on moving the other guys: Nylander, Holl, Sandin, and Kerfoot, I think the following moves would make more sense.
WIth Jankrok in Kerfoot is expendable, assuming ZAR is willing to take 1m he can be signed otherwise bringing back Engvall at ~1.5-2m would be the move. So, that puts them at 2.25m cap.
Moving out Holl for a 900k RHD (if possible) like Subban frees up 3.35m.
Exchanging Sandin for Necas and signing Necas, which at most would cost 4m. Leaves you at -0.05m and Carolina can actually use a LHD.
Finally, Nylander is traded to acquire a ~4.5m Dman perhaps a RHD or someone like Chychrun who can actually play the right side (I think) since he can later be moved to the left side once Muzzin and Giordano are gone.

You still would have Murray and Samsonov but if the don't work out can acquire a goalie later in the season since they will have ~2.35m in cap.
