Description

A Performance Bonus can be given to a player in addition to their salary. Performance bonuses are only paid to the player if they meet the requirements as defined by the bonus. Performance bonuses count against the salary cap; however, a team can exceed the salary cap due to performance bonuses by the maximum performance bonus cushion amount of 7.5 percent of the upper limit.

Leafs aren't using any performance bonuses and have avoided using them in the past for ELC contracts. They could in theory exceed the cap by 7.5%, $6,187,500, by using these bonuses on Malkin.

I've been looking but I can't find one. Performance bonuses are limited in ELC contracts but there's no wording anywhere that limits them in 35+. The Oilers would have more trouble doing it though because they owe performance bonuses to their ELC defensemen.
