Right Idea wrong player, it was mentioned on Sportsnet this morning that the Avs are looking into Toews as a replacement for Kadri, not Kane.

Girard and a 3rd would probably get this done with retention. But after the first round are the Hawks still looking for D now?

Still wouldn't do it. I don't care how bad the Hawks were last year, the guy had 37 points...that doesn't get you a top-4 defenseman AND a pick in return.

I hear you, just posting what I heard on Sportsnet. I can see though that we would be more for his Defensive play and PK than scoring. The cost is for the retention, which the Avs would probably ask for more than half, so +5 mill of cap space has a very high price. We saw Kassian and MArsek contracts which are less than 5 mill cost a first each.

Toews would be a good 2 or 3C. But not worth Girard. Maybe a 2nd and 3rd with retention

Why trade for Toews when you can sign Trocheck or Ryan Strome? Saves you a 1st and you probably pay each of those guys around $5m

I agree with you on the value of the player and the picks, but the market is very high right now for eating cap space. Given the trades yesterday I don't see how the hawks retain 5 mill or more without an asset that equals a 1st rounder coming back.

I can see Girard being valued more than a 1st in your mind, but something else has to be coming back and I don't think a 2nd and 3rd is enough value.

Strome would also be a decent replacement for Kadri and likely the cost to sign him is still manageable in the Avs cap situation, so yes I would agree with that. I would say Toews still has better Defensive and PK skills than Strome does. IT really is all about how you want to structure your team and what else is leaving/coming in with the Avs RFA's and UFA's.

Priority will be leaving room for the Mack extension, keeping the d-corps together, and signing Nichushkin/Lehkonen. We ideally sign another 2C for 3-4 years x ~$5m who can supplement some of what Kadri provided on offense last year. Beyond that, our PK was dynamite in the playoffs and the Avs are unmatched at 5v5, so I don't see a need to trade for Toews

They clear cap, Hawks a rebuilding, they are moving the overpaid player. Toews at his current contract is negative value, they need to make him worth a return
