Fitzy - Not trading 2nd overall for Miller or DeBrincat

Description

Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald gave a pre-draft media availability.

He took a few questions about trading #2 pick.

He said he will only trade for young (same age as Jack and Nico, age 20-22) major asset, that fits their team and has many years of team control left (not for anyone with 1 or 2 years control). Said there are very few players that meet criteria and so far does not have a "dance partner".

"A lot of people have asked me if I would trade the pick? Of course, if it makes our team better and it's something I can control for a long period of time, because you are giving up an asset that you control for a long period of time, an asset we believe will help us get to where we want to go."

When asked specifically about trading for DeBrincat and Miller, Fitzgerald reiterated, "I am holding the 2nd pick" but would not comments on what other conversations he has had.

Would’ve liked to see a DeBrincat deal, but I understand the logic behind holding onto the pick. I don’t feel there’s a difference maker of Cat’s ability in this draft, and while he does only have two years of control, I firmly believe he would love playing with Hughes and be resigned

They should 100% keep the pick. They're a team with a ton of needs. Maybe a TDL deal could be in the works if they're near the playoffs?

I also think Fitzy said a lot of that stuff in his press conference to drive the asking price down for some of these players. But granted, Fitzy's 'criteria' for a player he's looking for is very specific and VERY scarce in the NHL right now. Although I wonder would he be open to a sign and trade for some of these players especially since there are a good amount of agents at the draft now that it's in person. Still doubt it though.

One thing he mentioned was also trading down if the package/return was right for them so it'll be really interesting to see what happens.

I mean, as much as NJ could use some sniper they also need a power forward who can get in on the forecheck. This is where a guy like Tkachuk would be great but he doesn't fit the criteria. Not sure who else they could target

I think they are going to try and get more of the heavier play from middle six. Maybe a Puljujarvi, Kunin, Dach, etc is added

Also we have some more power forwards coming internally….Zetterlund will be full-timer this year, Wood should be back, Foote another year of development…maybe Slafkovsky.

Yes, I forgot to mention the trade down comments.

But I think NJD only trades down if Slafkovsky is taken #1. And I think teams only trade up is Slafkovsky is there at #2.

I don’t think Puljujarvi, Kunin, Dach would be candidates for 1st pick. Other assets would be moved for this guys.

Slafkovsky is likely the guy for NJ if he falls to #2
