Not even close to enough for Hughes. He’s a top 10 d man making less than anyone else close to him besides Hedman and he’s locked up long term. Minimum it takes is those 2 1sts holtz and another asset more valuable than sharangovich.

Siegenthaler is a top 10 defensive defenseman in the league. Luke Hughes is one year away. They could easily pick Nemec or Jiricek 2oa.

LOL, no he isn't, analytics aren't everything you know, you have to account for the fact that he's playing tough matchup minutes on what is a very porous defensive team. Yeah, they have Luke Hughes who is very promising, but I don't think picking Nemec or Jiricek with the 2OA is wise, not to mention neither is gonna be the best player available at 2OA, so the Devils should look to move down several spots in that case

Yes that's, that's literally what analytics do, that's the point of analytics, to isolate impact from the context to see how good a player actually is.

The fact of the matter is, Sharangovich and Wright/Slaf/Cooley, plus next year's first, are far more valuable to the Devils than Hughes. The Devils would be massively overpaying for a player that doesn't fill their most important needs, and sacrificing major pieces of their future. It's a terrible trade.

Siegenthaler led NHL in defensive WAR last year.
He passes the eyeball test too as elite defender.

Also, NJD wasn't a very porous defensive team.
Their goaltending stunk.

No, New Jersey isn't good defensively, their goaltending wouldn't be getting exposed so much if they were good defensively, and Siegenthaler is good, but not elite. Typical Devils fans overvaluing their own players

We were 11th in scoring chances against, 12th in shots against and 29th in goals against.

It was not the defense, it was the goaltending.

Between defense and goaltending, expected goals against go hand in hand. One does not overrule the other

I saw how badly the Devils goaltender, or lack there of was hurting them as well (albeit I wasn't watching as closely as you were), but it doesn't change that they need to improve defensively. Maybe all they need is internal improvement with Luke Hughes etc., but even with average goaltender, Devils would still only be fringe playoff contenders at best

A legit goalie, another year of development for young guys, maybe add 3rd pair defensive dman, and a net-front big-body-soft-hands winger…and we ought to be a playoff contender.
