Don't see why Devils wouldn't do this.
Replacing Tatar with Burakovsky at a reasonable contract would only make the Devils stronger.
Besides, Devils have to move at least one of their numerous middle six wingers anyways, why not let it be Tatar?

While I like Girard and Florida would be willing to move Bennett, I think Florida wants more of a defensive defenseman, not an offensive defenseman.

A LHD puckmover is EXACTLY what they need. Their PP whiffed badly in the playoffs and Girard would be a good PPQB for them too.

Why not? As Tintin said below NJ need a top 6 scoring winger and Burakovsky would be a great fit. Maybe the retention is a bit high but just depends on the other assets from Colorado to make the trade equitable.

Agree, seems like a good fit. Avs were rumoured to be checking in on Tatar late in the UFA window last year when he and Saad were the last two forwards available. He has usually had good Corsi too which Avs staff like.

I’d do it if he would sign for a reasonable price

What would the add need to be from Colorado in this deal in terms of pick/prospect? Tatar has a $5.25m salary this year which makes retention a bit trickier as NJ would need to pay more cash.

Oh I was writing under the assumption that Devils would get something a bit more interesting than a late pick back.
Getting someone like Behrens for Tatar at 50% retained wouldn't be too outlandish I'd think, though perhaps a bit optimistic from a Devils pov.
Foudy or a 2nd could also work if Avs are reluctant to move out another D prospect.

Avs reject both of those trades very easily.

I don’t know why the Devils would trade for Burakovsky’s rights. He’s a pending UFA and probably not the type of guy you want to give 8 years to.

No way does Sakic move Behrens for a one year rental like Tatar. Behrens is the Avs best prospect, Ellis 2.0.

Not every player you trade for their rights has to be to signed to 8 years. It often helps to have more time to negotiate and sell the player on your team, especially if you know you can meet their salary ask. For example the Avs traded for Soderberg but didn't sign him to an 8 year deal.
