2024 - The Rebuild Is Over

Créé par: jonh514

Description
In 2022 we draft:

Shane Wright
Cutter Gauthier (Move up to 11 to do this)
Tyler Brennan

Assuming another pick between #5-10 in 2023. I drafted Charlie Stramel since he's committed to Wisconsin and we have a bit of a history with that program! Also since I traded away Anderson, it'll be nice to have a projectable Power Forward in our development program

I also traded what I consider to be a very fair package for Dylan Holloway (another former Badger) as I feel the chemistry will be right with our young veterans

Does this team make the postseason in 2024?

habs are way more than 2 seasons of draft away from being a good team unless their goal is to be a bubble team.

Safe to say the rebuild isn't over, not even close, especially taking the defense and goaltending into account. Petry and Savard are old hermits, especially in two years.

Not expecting this team to win the cup. But I would say this team can realistically expect to make the postseason as a bubble or wildcard team. The players will continue to develop over the next few seasons and hopefully bring it together for a cup run another 2-3 years out.

I think Primeau has what it takes to be a good #1 in the NHL. He's been incredible in Laval this post-season. I think by 2024 he's our #1 goalie.

Man I hope not. Hoping to see the team invest in the kids and let them play without fear of being benched every time they make a little mistake.

Takes far more than 2-3 for a rebuild, Habs aren't adding enough that in 2 years the rebuild is over.

Cutter Gauthier wont make it to 11 he'll easily go top 7 if not top 8.

Calgary pick is like 26th overall those pieces don't move you up 15 spots. Not even remotely realistic here.

Petry is the current fastest smoothest skater on the habs. He's not done by a long shot.
Savard can still throw his weight around. Will it be the case in 2 years?... maybe not, but finding a bottom 6 D is not the end of the world. Maybe Logan Mailloux or Daniil Sobolev make the team at one point.

ok fine he might be the starter. But hes only making 2 mill here and he aint no Carey price. Competition for best goalie is Montembault and teenage Brennan so #1 doesn't say much to be honest. If Primeau puts up 30-40 games next year with solid numbers ill believe he becomes a good starter

Thanks for your response. You think Gauthier goes that high? Who falls in that case? He's ranked a lot lower than that on most draft boards I've seen.

Habs have some decent prospects already. No Elite talent (except maybe I hope Primeau... he seems to be turning it around and certainly found his motivation in the AHL right now) but Roy, Barron, Guhle, Xhekaj, Ylonen are all really exciting prospects and I think they all make the NHL in one capacity of another.

Fair enough. But I also think it's true that most of the players teams draft that participate in a rebuild in a meaningful way come from a period of 2-3 years. After that it's just development time and adding through free agency.

His stats in Laval this post-season are better than Carey's Calder run so far.

Cutter Gauthiers stock is rising up fast, I think he goes top 8 rather easily.

You'd definitely need to add better prospects to the #26 pick if you want to move up 15 spots need to add at least another 3rd or 4th round pick on top of it.

It's a massive reach saying this current team will be anything close to competitive in the next 4 years. The roster sucks, the contracts are terrible, the only high quality players they have are Suzuki Caufield and St Louis as coach. The only chance they will be competitive in 4 years is if Kent Hughes drafts very well, if he doesn't draft well, Id say they are about 6-8 years away. Also, Wright isn't a McDavid/Matthews level talent, he will be good on the team, a good leader probably, but probably an average 1st line centre/good 2nd line centre, maybe even third liner

If you are talking about GSVA... I think we "might" have our Elite 4 in Wright, Caufield, Guhle, Primeau. It will take a few years to know:

Will Caufield be a 50 goal scorer with the right supporting cast?
Will Guhle's offensive game continue to blossom? Will he be as destructive as he was in the WHL playoffs this season - he hit everything that moved.
Can Primeau take the Rocket all the way to the Calder Cup?
Can Wright return to his 15 year old form next season 1 year removed from Covid? It's a bit harsh to condemn him based on 1 OK not great year.

Lots of questions for sure... but that's why they play the games isn't it?

Thanks for your response. I don't think the Sharks management have come to terms with where their team is heading. They believe they can make the post-season again next year. Do you agree? Do you also agree that they would trade the pick for the right offer? What do you think it takes to secure the #11 pick?

You are right on both counts but unfortunately MTL doesnt have anything to offer that would help us get back into the playoffs.

In terms of a draft pick trade I would be looking for something like 20 + 33 for 11, which the habs obviously dont quite have.

True we don't really know anything about the future. If everything falls into place perfectly for the Habs then yes obviously they become contenders but that's unlikely especially with their bad contracts. It also depends on the teams in the division too. Panthers, Leafs, Tampa are all current teams that are really good, and you have the Sabres, Sens and Red Wings big time on the come up who have a lot more better players than the Habs. Caufield Suzuki Guhle Wright and Primeau isn't a core that can take you to the playoffs in my opinion. Just look at the core players that are in the playoffs now, crazy good players with size and grit too.

Outside the top 15 this draft falls off a cliff. Would take a bit more to get 11 overall.
