1 million in retained on that deal. It is only 2 years and he likely will be injured half the time. This same deal could be made with 3 or 4 other teams...

Realistically, the Leafs just buy him out if the asking price to dump him gets too stupid

Max had a very bad season and makes 2.3m AAV for one more year. His qualifying offer might make him a young free agent if he has another bad year. There is risk with this player

We're willing to take that risk. There's a much greater risk that SDA doesn't see the inside of an NHL arena without paying for the ticket.
