Caps don't go near this. Vanecek is currently playing at the same level as Varlamov, except he's 8 years younger. Washington would not be adding a quality bottom 6 forward as a cap dump and a mid 2nd rounder in this, especially with Varlamov possibly regressing from this season to next season. The assets Washington is adding is not worth a jump from a .908 s% to a .911 sv%.

Don't agree that Vanacek is worth more than Varlamov, but as good as the Hathaway-Dowd connection is, Hathaway is expendable with the young guys we have in the system. Caps still say no though.
