Even if that nylander trade is fair value it doesnt do anything worth while for Toronto. They're still trying to compete and this makes them worse and the cap savings dont make up for it

That doesn’t get you Nylander. Doesn’t do anything to help the Leafs.

Nyquist is a substantial downgrade from Nylander and Foudy is in bust territory. The picks don’t really help Toronto accomplish their goal so there’s really nothing of value here to be considered

Canucks decline. A first and/or one of your RD prospects (Ceulemans or Boqvist) is what it would take to get Miller

Foudy is a victim of Covid. He played his first few games for CBJ in the Bubble in 2020. He just hasn’t gotten enough games or the real chance to get ice time bc of CBJ having too many forwards on the roster and most of which could not be sent down without clearing waivers. Foudy is still very much a prospect. As far as the Leafs are concerned, they likely won’t get a impact defenseman for a winger. The Jackets could do Boqvist for Nylander and maybe a 2nd but that would be about it. Cap space is gold in the NHL. Nylander has great numbers but is unproven being away from such players as Matthews, Taveras, and Marner. I could see a conditional pick based on stats to help even but..,

In this scenario, there is no previous worked out extension. Without an extension in place, this is about what to expect value wise.

Leafs walk away from the kind of offer too. Hey absolutely can get an impactful top 4 right handed defenceman for Nylander. No question about it. You can’t offer that or won’t offer that, they’ll find someone that will.

Nylander isn’t being forced out. They don’t have to move him & wouldn’t move him for weak offers like this.

Then the Canucks don't make the trade, they'll only make a trade with a team that can afford an extension, otherwise they might as well just try to extend Miller themselves, because if nobody else wants to extend Miller, it means his market value must be within what the Canucks deem as affordable long-term

The problem is teams that have cap space and trying to balance that with teams that are also in position to try and compete for a cup. The Jackets have cap space and players in position to possibly open their window. Most teams with ample cap space are teams that are rebuilding. Nylander to those teams make no sense. Wingers just don’t have as much value. To get upscale type defensemen it will cost you. I mean most likely none of this happens but keep your expectations at a respectable level bc most people tend to think they will get more than what the player really is worth.

No. All that means is they know he will hit FA and they shouldn’t give up any assets for him. Vancouver has to be smart on how the deal with this.

You're making no sense. The Canucks will trade Miller for what they can get for him, but they haven't lost all their leverage

I know they haven’t lost all leverage yet. All I am saying is if GMs around the league feel he is not going to sign with Vancouver then they may wait till FA and keep assets. Eventually it may get to this.

To be honest, I think there will be at least one team that is inclined to pick up Miller as a rental in order to at least have exclusive negotiating rights before free agency, plus get him for a playoff run. It doesn't make sense for GM's to all gang up against one team and prevent them from being able to monetize a valuable asset
