Description
2022 NHL Entry Draft:
#28 (via CAR): (RC) Jimmy Snuggerud (USNTDP, USDP)
#32 (via COL): (RC) Ryan Chesley (USNTDP, USDP)
#145: (RD) Vladislav Sapunov (Moskova, MHL)
#177: (LD) Elias Pettersson (Orebro, J20 Nationell)
#209: (G) Jan Spunar (Olomouc, Czechia)

There's an argument of quality versus quantity with the Coyotes. I think there's a great fit for a team in the 14-18 range to trade down with the Coyotes for their late firsts. I'd like Edmonton to be the team to achieve that. RC and RD are areas of want for the organization and I think some quality ones exist in the USDP that the Oilers would LOVE to have bubbling under.

I spent a lot of today reviewing goaltenders. Specifically, I weighed their GSAA over the past 3 seasons (0.500, 0.333, and 0.167) to establish a "recency bias". Edmonton is a team built in a manner where it must find forgiveness via goaltending: the structure and systems appear such that they need a goaltender that performs above the norm. For context, the 2021-22 Oilers ran Koskinen and Smith (GSAA of -5.802 and -1.635 respectively) and visually we can confirm that the Oilers "just don't get THAT timely save" on a nightly basis. With the salary cap posing so many issues for next year's Oilers, I think Driedger represents both an excellent buy-low candidate and one that can be had at a discount. The tandem of Driedger and Skinner (3.912 and -0.220 GSAA) runs 11.128 GSAA higher than the current Oilers duo and would have the Oilers more comparable with the Capitals and Predators in both differential and likely points. There are some spooky things happening in Seattle, all of which have compounded in goals against and I think any player rescued from that tire fire normalizes next season.

The Seattle trade is merely structured as a hockey trade but with equivalent caps going both ways. Seattle upgrades at a position of dire need (RHD) and I think Driedger's save percentage gives Seattle an optic victory. I think Barrie-Eberle and Driedger-Kassian are already relatively fair swaps; Chiasson finds his way to the Seattle system for Driedger's retention.

Absolute shot-in-the-dark trade with Los Angeles here but with their riches at RHD, Durzi needing more time and money, and one of Spence or Walker being more suited to the third pair, I really hope there's an opportunity here for Edmonton to bring in an actual shutdown top-4 RHD to babysit Nurse. Some limited feedback suggested the Kings want right-handed forwards: I think Yamamoto is still the more expendable asset in that category while also representing actual NHL value. A quality pick in next year's draft is also sent to Los Angeles. I'm fine with an inter-divisional tax that sees Edmonton cough up their first but only if the Kings' fourth rounder goes back to Edmonton.

Anaheim being cash-poor makes the insured Klefbom deal desirable for the Ducks and a nothing pick two years down the road is exchanged in order to reach the cap floor. Smith might retire or he can have a final hurrah in Arizona. Edmonton takes back an AHL deal to be rid of his hit while the ASU Coyotes eek closer to the cap floor. The primary return here is Edmonton's ability to accrue cap space: if there must be no return for Klefbom and Smith, then so be it.

23 and 48 got the wings up to 15 last year. It’s not going to take 28 and 32 to go to 17. You’d get 28, something like 43, and a 4th

That Seattle trade is very low offer, kassian is a cap dump, and Barrie barely has value. 1st rounder should be added here.

No one is ready to take Roy’s role at 2RD. Wait until Faber gets here and we can start talking about trading Roy.

Agree with tryger here. If Faber is ready to make the jump close to the deadline next year then conversations can begin happening.

On top of that, the Kings won't move Roy without a first coming back. LA would be fine with the 2023 1st in exchange for a 4th. But to get the Kings to even have a thought about moving their best defensive defenseman, a 1st starts the conversation and builds from there. Think a return similar to the Muzzin-to-Toronto trade: a 1st, a NHL-ready player (Grundstrom), and a B+ prospect with upside (Durzi). There might be even more of a tax to send him to a divisional opponent.

In a year rife with uncertainty as half of the prospects didn't play last year. I'm convinced that draft pick values will normalize this year.

There's also a gap between pick 23 and 28/32. That's about where the drop-off exists. The value's fine.

If Kassian was $1M cheaper, nobody would ever complain about him as a player. A low-value asset for sure but cap dump isn't a great way to describe a player with consistent third line production. He's just expensive. With how miserable a year Driedger had and his being excess on the Kraken roster, the deal isn't nearly as off as you think.

Your assessment of Barrie is incredibly off however. He's one of the most productive RHD in the league over the past 5 years.

With Durzi playing 19min per night and Doughty obviously commanding upwards of 25, is that really the kind of issue that should turn the Kings towards saying no? One of Spence or Walker easily eat up the remaining 16min, no?

I'm fine with upgrading the pick and taking back LA's 4th but Yamamoto clearly supplants the NHL-ready player plus B-prospect and likely meets the need of divisional tax. He's an NHL winger. Much more inherent value than futures.

I don't particularly think the timing is as important as it's being made out to be. The Kings are getting a bonus playoff berth with their group because Edmonton and Vegas decided to stagnate this season. Vancouver may or may not be relevant next year so I think 4th in the Pacific is still doable for LA with or without Roy.

I'm not saying Yamamoto isn't more valuable than the prospects because you are right in that he's an NHL player. I'm just not sure he's the guy LA would be going after to improve their top 6, which is the area the Kings want to address.

And I disagree with the thought process of going after only 4th in the Pacific. The Kings will play for the best spot they can by icing the best team they can. Until Faber is ready, Roy provides the best at that position outside of Drew Doughty. The kids that LA has playing now are doing fantastic, but I wouldn't for a second think that LA wouldn't rather have Roy in right now for the stretch run.

Durzi is forced to play those minutes (Doughty and Roy injured), Roy is the second best defenseman and our best shut down man. Durzi, Spence, Clarke and Walker are the ones fighting for 3RD right now.
