Smith is on IR so not being able to play him is irrelevant to Montreal and is a UFA so Montreal has no future cap issues. Smith also has no trade protection.

Anyone can trade after the deadline, the deadline only affects a players eligibility for the rest of the season and playoffs. Since the Habs are out of the playoffs they don't have to worry about that.

Vegas can't take Weber since they don't have cap space to add his salary before placing it on LTIR. See a team has to have the 7.86 mil cap space to add Weber to the roster then move him to LTIR and then replace his salary with other players.

IR still counts against the cap so Vegas gets the 5 mil cap space they were going to get from the Dadonov trade. It's LTIR that allows you to go over the cap, since Smith is not on LTIR his cap hit works the same as Dadonov's.

Then why did Vegas acquire Kesler in the initial ANA trade?

Unless the NHL changed the LTIR rules, I would assume it was just because Anaheim wanted his salary off their books as they are a small budget team.

They have 3.6M in cap space right now, counting LTIR available. If they send Dadonov to MTL, get another 5M cap space.

Now they have 8.6M, they add Weber's 7.8M, put him on LTIR, then Martinez can come back. Stone come back in first round of playoffs.

The thing is, they could just send us Dadonov and it would be the same. Weber's contract is useless to this trade.

I do believe Anaheim was only having to pay 20% of Kesler’s contact due to insurance (at least I thought I read that somewhere)

They already traded their first this year, even though they top 10 protected it it is essentially gone.

Why Reilly Smith? Isn't he supposed to come back soon? And IF they make the playoffs?

I would help Vegas for less than a 1st so that price gets beaten

I don't think we can take Smith. We have 11M n cap space right now, but Price will probably return late March, so his cap hit of 10,5M will kick in, and we won't have enough space for Smith's contract. Ottawa, Arizona, Buffalo or Seattle would be better options for this.

Smith is expected back but has no trade protection and is a UFA at seasons end. Dadonov has trade protection and rumor is all 7 Canadian and 3 California teams are on his no trade list. Since they both have the same cap hit and Vegas needs to become cap compliant, it would be easier to trade a player without protection and since Smith is already injured, trading him and him being ineligible doesn't really affect the Habs roster.

I showed the roster with Smith and Price on it and we are under the cap, the cap space is irrelevant anyway since the penalty for being over the cap is not gaining points and the goal for this season is to draft as high as possible.

LTIR does not allow the team to build cap space only to exceed the cap by the players salary with replacement players. Once a player is healthy and they come off of LTIR the team needs to account for their cap hit in the 81.5 mil cap limit. since they are currently at 93.3 Mil they would be over the cap by whoever returns cap hit. Basically these are the numbers that need to be accounted for and the Bolded one is the cap amount if every player was on the roster as you can see this exceeds the upper limit and would need to be accounted for if Martinez and or Stone came back.

    PROJECTED CAP HIT: $92,062,256
    PROJECTED LTIR USED: $10,562,256
    PROJECTED CAP SPACE: $0
    CURRENT CAP SPACE: $3,620,000

I know but that's also why Stone and Martinez are not coming back unless they make the playoffs, maybe (if cleared for contact).

I think the NHL will have to update these rules to consider the playoffs more so there is less frustration from fans of opposing teams.

The whole reason behind the Dadonov trade is because one or both are close to returning and since a player "cannot" remain on LTIR if healthy then the Knights have to clear cap. Also without Stone it is more likely the Knights miss the playoffs so they need to activate him sooner rather than later.
