    Detroit declines.

Detroit only have 2 retention slots available and several of their own players that are expected to be traded may need retention. Detroit isn't going to give up a retention slot for only a 4th round pick and thereby risk screwing up one of their own trades.

I'm fine with moving from 4th to 2nd round and just getting an extra D that has experience but isn't expensive.

It's going to cost more than that to retain 2.25 million. Detroit got a 4th last year from Tampa for just over a million in retention and like Billy12Bob said we only have 2 slots.

The actual amount Detroit would retain on Subban would $540,000 if this trade were to happen today . When retaining it is calculated using the remaining cap hit.

Yeah if I remember correctly it was about $220,000 last year for Savard but I might be wrong.

I'm just fine not giving NJ anything for Subban considering its rumoured they may just terminate his contract and make him a FA. I'll hang onto Dermott the 2nd and you can keep the 4th and Subban

Doesn't have to be Detroit, really doesn't matter what team but the cost to retain approximately 550,000 is a 4th

If it happens on the TDL it's just over $440,000 it's basically something for nothing and I like that but Namestnikov with retention could bring in a 2nd and Leddy had a great game against the Wild and if he plays like that up until the TDL Detroit could get a third for him with retention. For me I'd take this if Detroit has a retention slot open.

There's also Staal, Stecher, and Greiss.

That's five players we're all expecting to be traded (or disposed of in other ways). The likelyhood of Detroit managing to keep a retention slot open for a 3-way trade is rather tiny.

The cost of retention is determined by four things:
    1. The size of the retention.
    2. The length of the retention.
    3. How many slots are open for the retaining team and how many do they need for other purposes.
    4. How desperate the asking team is for the retention to be made.

The amount in dollars is absolutely NOT what decides the price by itself, in fact it is the least important of the four items.

A simple look at the Detroit roster would have told you that they have five players they're likely to trade and that three out of those five have a cap cost that may warrant retention to get a trade done. You'd also have seen that they only have two slots open this season.

Detroit retained $220,000 on Savard for a 4th the last time they retained. You're asking them to retain twice that amount in a year when they don't have any slots to spare for the same price.

Yeah but the only player Greiss is an upgrade over is Mrazek. Stecher is Detroit's #4 RHD and missed a good chunk of the season with an injury. I do think Staal retires and then makes the switch to the front office why else would he move his family to Detroit in the 2021 offseason and not in the 2020 offseason.

Greiss only have to be better than whatever 3rd goalie a tem has in order fulfill a role in the playoffs. The likelyhood of him being traded without retention is zero.
Stecher is still good enough to be interesting as injury insurance if a team can get him in under the cap and so is Staal.

If Staal wants to chase a cup one last time that doesn't hinder him retiring in Detroit but a lack of a retention slot could well make that dream impossible.

Leddy is very unlikely to be traded without retention and Namestnikov gets a better return if retained and those two should have first dibs on the retention slots we have but in case we can sell Namestnikov without retention then I don't see it as impossible to net something for one of the other three.

The whole point is that trading away a retention slot for a measly 4th is a dumb idea for Detroit this season.

But I did say if we have an open retention slot I'd take the 4th and realistically Namestnikov and Leddy are the only players we have that could return a pick higher than a 4th. With Namestnikov I really think he goes to Pittsburgh playing on Malkin's wing and more than likely they don't need the retention. I really do like Staal but Detroit couldn't move him last season and I'm not sure a contender is going to take him and I do think he knows that to some extent. Considering Verbeek left to be the Ducks new GM. I know Yzerman has already promoted the people on his staff accordingly but as far as I know he hasn't hired anyone yet. There aren't a lot of GMs better than Yzerman to learn from. You have Sakic, BriseBois and Sweeny. As for the rest of our geriatric UFAs we don't see eye to eye and thats ok but I spend enough time arguing with fans from other teams and I really don't want to argue with fellow Wing's Fans as well. So maybe agree to disagree?
