Description
You guys can be a particular bunch on here, so this is a feeler, NOT A PROPOSAL. Just a feeler...

It APPEARS you have a need at LHD next season, 2022-2023.

Now, forget what you THOUGHT about Mike Matheson prior to him becoming a Penguin and realize he's completely changed his game around and is KILLING it. Do your research before answering, but realize the Penguins figured out how to utilize him properly and he'd probably be filling a similar role for you.

I understand the contract is a bit much to play on your third pair, but not much more than you're paying Zadorov right now and he's a better dman than Zadorov.

So why am I moving a dman I'm touting so much? Money. The Pens need to free up space, you have SOME space, we have NONE lol. You guys have some nice space to work with next year according to CF and he'd only be $1M more than you're paying Zadorov now unless the plan is to keep Zadorov.

THIS IS JUST FEELING IT OUT TO GET FEEDBACK.

IDK would be nice to have him and Gudbranson on a cheaper deal but it might not happen to let young guys play

You probably have a good chance of keeping Gudbranson on a cheap contract, but Zadorov's physical game ups his price regardless of his actual ability. I figured Matheson/Gudbranson would a dynamite combo for you guys. I really don't want to move Matheson or Pettersson at this point, but the Pens are in a tough spot and need to free up cash.

Zadorov will go to market, I do think the Flames try keep Gudbranson on the right side but that 3LD could be filled by Valimaki hopefully, Mackey desperately or they find a veteran making less than Zadorov to bring in until one of those two guys steals the spot. I think coming out of training camp unless the Flames see a major improvement from Valimaki they will have a guy they sign late in the off season for 800K - 1.5M while Mackey and Valimaki figure it out. If Valimaki doesn't break camp with the team next year I think he's finally trade bait.

Dube is certainly a moveable piece but I think you'd be looking at a Sam Bennett like trade instead that gives Calgary the ability to draft or develop the assets the way that they would like to.

Fair enough, but to elaborate on something you said and I ask this because it's not like the Flames are rebuilding, they're a legit contender now, so do you really think they'd limp in with a minor signing on the 3rd pair? I'm not saying you can't find a way to get an effective 3rd pairing dman at that price, but if they had the opportunity to add someone of quality, not even necessarily Matheson, you don't think they'd take it so they can still be very competitive?

I am a little concerned about that as well because Kylington has been good but severely sheltered by Tanev, I worry about Tanev regressing and Kylington showing more warts than he already has this year, still a turnover machine, can outskate his problems but if his D zone responsibilities aren't covered by Tanev he's in a lot of trouble. Flames are primed for a signing like Ian Cole, Hagg, Beaulieu, Leddy, I do wonder about a Giordano reunion if the price is right, I think a lot of Flames fans really really want Valimaki to take that step but it's just so unsure, plus Sutter's kid has a running feud with Valimaki, you obviously assume that doesn't play into anything but they're all human! If I was the GM which I am so very far from I would go out and get Nate Beaulieu this year at the deadline and extend him in the off season if you know Zadorov wants more than you're willing to give him.

I get that. I have to think CGY is going to a little aggressive this off-season in filling in their holes, especially if they go deep in the playoffs. Matheson may not make complete sense for you guys, but I do think spending more on a 3rd pairing guy who can jump into a 2nd pair role is a vital hedge they should take.

I don't disagree, it's the last year of Sutter and Treliving's contract I would be shocked if they didn't go all in next season. I do think that Kirk Mueller is the next head coach of the Flames and Sutter may move to a Burke like position or retire so the next two years are as wide open as a window could be.

Matheson just may be too expensive if they want to go directly the Zadorov route as they did this year in getting an expiring RFA for a year or two they could make a deal for a Mikkola, HAgue, Lauzon etc. Will be a really interesting position to watch over the off season.

We need to sign Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane and Kylington this off-season. We have zero cap space for a 3rd pairing 5 million dollar player. Like none at all. Not sure why these other Flames fans are even considering this. Only way this could happen if its for Monahan or Lucic straight up, and even then Tre won't take that brutal contract term.

Fair enough. That does complicate things lol
