Imagine shipping out a franchise icon, and getting back a cap dump in Jeff Petry, a pending UFA in Ryan Murray, a good 3rd liner in JT Compher 50% retain, an ok-at-best prospect in Shane Bowers, and the Habs 2nd round pick.

I want to say it's quantity over quality, but the only fun thing there is that Habs 2nd.

If you consider Petry like a cap dumb you will for sure think that it’s bad, but if you consider him for the player that he proved to be during the last couple match under his new coach he for sure is worth Drew Helleson in term of value and the second pick is to compensate for the first round pick of Colorado since I don’t think he’s worth Helleson + 1st round. Montreal’s pick will be in the first so and Colorado will also have late pick in 2023. It’s a difference of 5-10 positions which is why I added it.

Weird since it’s the exact same trade here and a Colorado fan found it fair. Maybe the value is off for Philadelphia, but to say they are getting fleeced? https://fr.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/3083821

How? The 2nd in 2022 is pretty much a 1st. The 33rd-34th overall pick this year is worth pretty much the same as the 25th-30th overall in 2023, assuming nothing crazy happens in Colorado.

So overall MTL ships out Petry (who, based on numerous reports, still has positive value) and retains 50% on Compher for a mediocre prospect. How are they fleecing anyone?

If you view Petry has a cap dump that makes sense, but apparently, executives have stated that Petry's first 40 games this year do not completely overshadow his last solid 4-5 years.

2- Reports... heh, good one. Petry is a 34 year old who has fallen off a cliff and is signed to 3x6.25 past this season. If his value is positive, it;s also microscopic. And Helleson is not a mediocre prospect. Not sure how you got that.

3- What executives?

Id like to know why Colorado decline tho ? Is it only because they are rentals or you think that the price is too high. I know Sakic doesn’t like rentals, but he said he would be more aggressive so maybe?

bc why are they getting Montreal involved, they are doing all the hard work for montreal why they are getting out of petrys contract scot-free. Then you add in them getting the 2 best assets in the 1st and Helleson. Montreal isnt getting the prize in this trade

You say that like Petry is completely worthless. Also the pick shouldn’t be a big issue since there won’t be much of a difference. Around a 10 places differences.

a 34 year old Dman who is having a major sign of decling this season...yeah I would say his value is at all time low.
He has logged major minutes over his career, Its near top 10 of all NHL dmen that mount of minutes he has played. Hes not going to age gracefully going into this contract at his current age.

Add in his cap hit, yeah thats a contract you dont want. Flyers sure dont want it

Well in the last matches he proved to still be able to play at a high level. Since the new coach.

The Flyers and the Stars are apparently talking with Montreal to acquire him. Pretty sure they would want him even with that contract.

random few games doesnt change a larger body of work this year. Anyone can look good for a week or 2,
the concern is still there bc it was months and months of poor play.

Interest doesn't mean trade talks. Teams always have interst, doesnt mean they are talking trade.

Easy no for the Avs and Flyers. Flyers get nothing that really excites them and the Habs get out form under Petry's contract and make out like the biggest bandits in years with the best prospect and pick involved. Avs get the pieces they want but at an overpay. The deal is just overcomplicated and MTL never needed to be involved, let alone get to be the team who profits most. But then we should expect that from a Habs fan I suppose.

Talking about profiting the most ... Every fan is doing it voluntary or not. You guys wanted Lehkonen for a 3rd a month ago, don't tell me it's only the habs fan.

Most certainly are the worst. At least the vast majority of other fan bases are trying to be fair even if still biased. The words fair and reasonable obviously got removed from dictionaries in Montreal.

Btw, FYI Lehkonen probably isn't worth much more than a third, maybe a second. Most fans out of MTL agree on that!!!

Next year's draft is incredible in terms of high end talent, but depth is similar and anyway, it can still change. In any case, the hit rate for prospects drafted in the 25 and 40 range is very close. A 2022 draftee is closer to the NHL than a 2023 draftee, which is a factor for teams looking to compete soon.

I'm not an insider, I can only rely on what's being reported, so yes, reports.

Helleson projects to be a 5th/6th D and he's not a top 5 prospect for Colorado who has a bottom half prospect pool, so yeah, decent prospect.

Reporters never name the executives they speak to, but it's been reported by Lebrun, Marek & Friedman, NRD.

1- Setting aside that claims about which draft is better or deeper, and what the "hit rate" for a certain range of picks, are nothing but way too early speculation about teenagers and an average that is not always applicable, and that 2022 draftees will automatically be closer to the NHL is again both presumptive and case by case... are you actually suggesting that Montreal is going to compete sooner? Heh, good one.

2- Link one such REPORT, please. I'll bet dollars to donuts whatever you link is not a report at all, but just wiggle word guess-floating nonsense.

3- Yeah I get The Athletic, too. It's not gospel, those rankings shift every season. And what they didn't mention is that his trajectory is going up at a higher than usual rate. Helleson was further down the list last year. Things are always changing. Some players improve, other don't. He very much does.

4- See #2. And I don't even recall LeBrun (the only one of those three who is worth more than a nickel) saying any such thing in his print articles.
