Kerfoot needed to make the deal under the cap. Kerfoot could easily get you a second anyways, but likely more valuable as a roster player.

What does Miller bring that Toronto needs. They have a very strong offence - but need defence. Toronto needs to stop looking for "shiny things". The D additions would do a lot more than another scoring winger.

Mrazek move seems more likely - at TDL or after - to free up cap for Campbell

Miller brings depth scoring, and a guy that can get to the dirty areas to score. And he is versatile if JT went down again. He is exactly what they need. A Top 6 F along with a Top 4 D.

The Leafs second line has been brutal as of late and bringing in a player with an edge is always a bonus. This would make the Leafs top two lines much more formidable as well as really shore up some of their "grit" issues throughout all 4 lines.

I agree that it doesn't make much sense to bring someone like that in without grabbing a defenseman as well.

With Miller they have $11M next year to sign Campbell, 2-3 D, and 4 bottom 6 forwards. Can't see Campbell getting below $5M per year. Can always move contracts in the off season but that means selling low. Only reason in my mind to make that deal is Dubas has been told win this year or you are out.

Dubas has to be feeling the pressure for sure, but he needs to sustainably move the franchise forward even if it isn;t a win or else proposition. But Miller's contract is essentially Kerfoot and Holl next year (with both having same term as JT, expiring after next year). So, if there's a price of a 1st and Dermott or Holl (hearing VAN looking for D) or prospect, I think he has to do it. But can't be Lilypad as he is a part of the cap solution for the near future. And he get get out from Kerf and Holl easily in the off season. Last point, Jack has played into a more Mrazek style contract, maybe in the $4-4.5 m range over 3-4 years.

We don't want Lillypad, much rather rely on Regula and Mitchell who I think are better prospects.

Hawks decline. 1st + Robertson for Hagel. Kerfoot isn't of interest based on the timetable of being 2 to 3 years out before the hawks compete; trade Kerfoot elsewhere where he would provide more value. A 2nd round pick for De Haan retained will get it done. If we need to take back a cap dump, add it at a cost to the Leafs notably Mrazek but add another 3rd rounder to take on his cap hit.

I would be shocked if his agent agreed to anything near that. See Anderson departure. The issue isn't the goalie - its the D.

Like your thinking - but still think adding a $5M+ winger on top of big four makes next year very difficult. Even if Campbell takes $4M, Kase and Lyubushkin resign at $1.25, and Spezza, Lilligren, Engvall take a minimum - you are over cap if Muzzin doesn't stay on LTIR. And you don't have any depth on D or wing. Trading two for one only works short term.

Next years D would look like
Reilly - Brodie
Muzzin (?) - Lyubushkin
Sandin - Liljegren
Dermott

Basically Holl for Lyubushkin, but a more banged up Muzzin.

I don't disagree that Miller would be an upgrade and would bring more - just that adding more grit up front won't change the defence zone issues.
